AT&T 22251 - A weak phone

I have got this cordless phone for 9 months now - I got it on sale and thought that with a 900 MHz phone I would not go wrong.

The best part of this phone is the second battery.

The bad in brief:

  • the batteries have to be charged/ exchanged more often than I like. I keep the phone in the cradle most nights, at least 4 nights a week. However, every 2 days I will find that the signal becomes weak during a phone call. That’s when I know that I have to exchange the batteries soon. I have never actually lost a call but the static has been so bad that I promised to call back in a few minutes with the other battery.

  • when I’m in the garden, about 40 meters (130 foot) away from the base station, then the reception often is bad.

The reception is good if I don’t move. But as soon as I turn my head, there’ll be static. Once I stop moving, the static usually is gone.

Confirmation:

allthough this is a digital 900 MHz transmission, there is static. That surprised me. I would have thought that once the transmission goes below a certain quality, the connection would just go break. Yes, this phone will show static.

I think that the static did not show up in the first 3 months of ownership.

Another disturbing effect is that when I accidentally have the phone in the car and drive out of the reception area, when I come back to my house, the phone will not automatically make the connection again.

I have to put it into the cradle and mostly even turn off/ on the power. (’’Control-Alt-Delete’’ for phones ;-)

The phone shows the same effect when it runs out of power. I have to put it back in the cradle in order to have it make the connection between handset and base station.

I would not buy this phone again and better go with a SONY or VTECH. I’ve used phones of both companies and they did not show these problems.
