Avatar has already won great praise about the visual treat that it offers, but it is far more than just that. Avatar transports you to a new world and strangely, without exception, everyone seems to want to be a part of the jungle-world rather than a part of the "sky people" which is what the earthlings are called in the movie. The inhabitants of this jungle planet are what we all aspire to be, nature loving, at peace with themselves, bonded with their surroundings, and they see the living beings in their surrounding as an extension of themselves. Because the "sky people" want something that the Navis(inhabitants of that jungle planet) have, a precious substance, they try to talk them into evacuation and then eventually aggression. If the "sky people" were a content lot too, everyone could have coexisted in peace, and through the first phase of trying to evacuate diplomatically, our hero realizes there is nothing that the earthlings can offer that would tempt the Navis to shift residence. The rest of this review is more to reflect on after seeing the movie:-) All I can say is, please dont let somebodys cynical review stop you from seeing this movie even if there is a single negative review for this movie!
After the movie experience, I really did not want to get up and come out of that world. And when I did, I really felt "connected" to the surroundings more than ever. In the movie, the Navis have been portrayed as "blue beings." A blue person in Hindu scriptures is seen as one who is self-realized(Vishnu, Shiva, Rama, Krishna are all depicted with blue bodies). The Navis have something that resembles "nerve endings" in their hair which is what they use to connect or bond to the ground or another being, just as we have our spinal cords that connect us to the higher self and beyond. There is a statement in the movie that says all energy is borrowed/temporary, and needs to go back to its source, which is what the prana/jiva is too. There were a lot more such things to note. The Navis beleive in their sixth sense and heed to clues from their source. Though they seem scarcely dressed, it is so beautifully portrayed that there is no element of vulgarity. The ritual of transition of life is also very profound and depicted beautifully. Because of the title, I would like to beleive that they story makers really meant all the above when they made this movie:-)
In summary, James Cameron has successfully created a whole new planet which seems so real and magnificient! We all need to connect with nature and live like the Navis and realize that everytime we are not doing that we are the "sky people."
