APD is about three main characters Guru Gulab Khatri - Aawara (Akshay Kumar), Anmol - Pagal (Aaftab Shivdasani), Deewana - Yedaa Anna (Sunil Shetty).
APD opens with Guru’s father-in-law’s (Ompuri) hospitalisation and death. In his will he has left an inheritance of 1000 crores worth diamonds in a bank at New York. As per his will this diamond has to be divided equally amongst his son Vikrant, Daughter Preeti and son-in-law Guru, who does not love his wife. The condition of the will is that in case of death of any one the other two can claim the diamond after producing the death certificate of the expired person, similarly in case of death of two persons the surviving heir can claim the diamonds likewise. In order to lay hands on the diamonds Vikrant tries to eliminate Guru by killing a Minister in the guise of Guru.
As soon as Guru comes to know about this, he flees to USA in disguise, (is our hero so clever that he has already prepared a passport with the disguised photograph in advance or it is so that our Passport Office has started functioning so efficiently that a person gets his passport immediately ?). Guru reaches USA and stays in the neighbourhood of Anmol who is a dentist by profession but at home he is treated worse than a slave by his wife and mother-in-law. Anmol plans to run off but he is stopped by his father-in-law Manilal (Paresh Rawal) saying that there is no point in trying to run away as their passports have been seized by their respective wives. Manilal has a habit of keeping on forgetting names of persons including his own name and his wife’s name.
Their wives comes to know (through a news broadcast in a news channel), that any person giving the whereabouts of Guru (whom they recognise as staying in their vicinity) would be rewarded with Rs. 2 crores by Vikrant ( it’s a pity that our news channels do not have any other news to broadcast and they have become so cheap that they have started broadcasting the reward announcements of underworld dons) Vikram Bhatt please direct sensibly. They pack off the team of father-in-law (FIL) and son-in-law (SIL) to Mumbai to meet Vikrant and pass on the information about Guru.
In the hotel they come across Chotta Chatri (Jhonny Lever) a a conman of Yedaa Anna who keeps stammering (Yedaa Anna keeps on forgetting important words and names of things like plane, etc). Chatri takes them to Yedaa who in turn takes them to Vikrant. Vikrant takes the whereabout of Guru from them and asks Yedaa to accompany them and trace out Guru and to kill him only when Vikrant comes to USA.
On seeing Preeti, Anmol falls in love with her and he opens out his heart to her and tells her that he will relieve her from Guru. Anmol however, does not favour the killing of Guru and he calls up Guru and informs that Vikrant has hired a local goon to kill him.
Yedaa and chatri with FIL & SIL come to USA. On reaching USA, SIL tells Yedaa that he has already informed Guru about their arrival. On reaching Guru’s residence FIL & SIL comes to know that Yedaa and Guru are known to each other and that Guru has given yedaa a contract of Rs.5 crores to eliminate Vikrant.
Vikrant reaches USA and fight ensues amongst the gang and Vikrant is killed. Guru and Preeti collect the diamond after producing the death certificate of Vikrant. After their collecting the diamonds Vikrant emerges back and tells that the one killed by them was his duplicate. Once again they start to fight and now Vikrant is really killed.
By now Anmol’s wife has fallen in love with Yedaa, Anmol has fallen in love with Guru’s wife Preeti and Guru has fallen in love with Anmol’s secretary (It seems that the Producer Nadiadwala and Director Vikram Bhatt are in love with EXCHANGE OFFERS so they have decided such a great exchange offer).
By the time I watched the horrible 18 reels I totally forgot as to where I have to go. I feel that this film has been named aptly Aawara which is for the Producer & Director (Nadiadwala & Vikram Bhatt), Pagal is for those Distributors who have taken the distribution rights of this movie and Deewana are the public who go to watch this slick movie.
Though I have become Deewana I shall never recommend any of my friends or MS readers to become Deewana by watching this movie.
Music is not upto the mark. There is nothing like a storyline in this movie.
Goof UP
In the opening scene Akshay is shown fighting with little beard but by the time he finishes his fight and reaches hospital he is clean shaven (Vikram Bhatt ka Jawaab Nahin).
I have rated this movie with two stars one and a half is for Paresh Rawal and the other half is for Jhonny Lever.
