Awarapan was the one keenly awaited by me, ever since this year began. The reason is that it is made by Vishesh Films, one of the finest production companies of Bollywood, who had given remarkable and unforgettable movies last year like Gangster and Woh Lamhe. And plus, Mahesh Bhattsaab saying Awarapan as the best movie which has come out of Vishesh Films had made me more keen and desperate to watch the movie. So is Awarapan really the best movie of Vishesh Films? Is it an outstanding piece of cinema??
The story of the movie: Shivam (Emraan Hashmi) doesn’t believe in God. He lives a life full of sorrows and loneliness. In order to escape from his tragic past, he dedicates himself to serve his master, who was also a gangster, Malik (Ashutoush Rana), who runs a chain of hotels in Honk Kong. Malik had a young mistress with him, Reema (Mrinalini) who was a Pakistani girl and unfortunately a victim of human trafficking. Malik had bought her as a slave. Malik doubted that Reema was seeing someone and in order to be sure, Malik tells Shivam to keep an eye on her while he is away for a few days in London. As soon as Shivam starts his job, he is reminded of his dark tragic past. He is reminded of Aliya (Shirya Saran), a girl he loved the most and who is no more. And then one night, Shivam finds out that Reema had a secret boyfriend (Rehaan Khan), who wanted to free her from the clutches of slavery and take her back to Pakistan. What happens next?
Awarapan scores brownie points because it does full justice to the story. The story is very different, but not extra ordinary. But Mohit Suri, the master director, presents and executes it well. Also the movie is highly engrossing and interesting and does not bore even for a moment. One of the best feature of the movie and the story is it is totally unexpected. You never know what will happen the next moment!
There are several moments and sequences in the movie, which are very well executed. Emraan’s flashback (his falling in love with Shirya) was brilliant and the tragedy was brilliantly presented. The song ‘To Phir Aao’ was also well directed and it moves you. Similarly, there are lots of sequences in the second half too, which would remain etched in one’s memory for a long time.
So coming back to our question, Is Awarapan the best movie of Vishesh Films? Unfortunately no. Awarapan is extra ordinary and one of the finest movies of the year but it is not as great as Gangster and Woh Lamhe and unfortunately, not the best movie of Vishesh Films, in my opinion.
The movie boosts of some fantastic performances. Each actor has done a splendid job.
For Emraan Hashmi, this is a performance he should be proud of! He does such a great job in this movie man! No other actor would have able to do justice to his role. I hope he gets nominated for the Best Actor category in the awards.
Mrinalini Sharma is just perfect for her role. She brings out the right emotions at the right time. She will surely has a long way to go! Shriya Saran had a very small role, but though she is extremely likeable.
Ashutosh Rana is back with a bang!! He does a terrific acting throughout the movie. I hope we can see him in more movies! Ashish Vidyarthi is also seen after a long time and he too does a great job. Purab Kohli was outstanding and he was the next best performer after Emraan. He does something, which he has done before and succeeds completely! Great work, Purab!
Salil Acharya (the VJ on B4U Music Channel) does a debut and he was also terrific. Shaad Randhawa , who was seen in Woh Lamhe, was fantastic. Rehaan Khan, whose first movie was Jaana, plays his part perfectly. Atul Parchure was funny.
Pritam’s music was great but not as nice as the music of Gangster and Woh Lamhe. Songs, which stand out, are ‘To Phir Aao’, ‘Tera Mera Rishta’ and ‘Mahiya’. Raaj Chakravarti’s cinematography was perfect and superb. The lensman does a good job in capturing the beauty of Rajasthan and Honk Kong. Editing was good. Dialogues were fantastic and quite sharp.
Mohit Suri is getting better with each of his movie. Mohit Suri’s first movie was Zeher wherein he first showed his unique filmmaking talents. In the same nice way, he made Kalyug and Woh Lamhe. And now with Awarapan, he proves that he is one of the best directors of Bollywood. He has treated each scene with utmost care and the movie therefore becomes an extra-ordinary product. Great work, Mr Suri! I am waiting for your next movie!!
Some of the best scenes of the movie:
The first scene of the movie
Emraan and Purab Kohli’s entry!
The scene when Emraan and Mrinalini for the first time
The song To Phir Aao and Mahiya
Emraans flashback
The intermission point
The entire second half
On the whole, Awarapan is one of the finest movies of the year. It has good story, even better execution and fantastic performances. Its collection would be affected as it is released with the biggies Apne and Aap Kaa Surroor. But though, this movie should be watched, especially for those who appreciate serious and qualitative cinema.
