STORY------ Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh Bachan) is a rich business man, who represents the importance of elders looking through their kid’s eyes to understand them, and the importance of giving more meaning to LIFE before age old traditions. Amitabh’s wife is of course Shobhna (Hema Malini) Their only son Avinash (Salman Khan) returns back home after 7 years of studies in Abroad. Amitabh and Salman don’t share a father and son relationship rather they enjoy making bets with each-other and call the other “buddy.” Soon Millie (Rani Mukherjee) is introduced seen painting in the same park where the father and son are playing golf. A sweet heartwarming love story of Salman and Rani begin from there, and they soon get married with the blessings of their families. A note worthy situation happens at the wedding of these two when Amitabh, going against his old brother’s (Om Puri) decision brings his widowed sister-in-law to the wedding ceremony. Om Puri believes in the old superstitious traditions, and tells Amitabh that it’s not the right thing to have the presence of widows in such holy ceremony’s. however Amitabh opposes him.
Salman and Rani are soon blessed with a child named Ansh. However a depressing incident occurs when Salman has an accident and is pronounced dead. Now the time comes to prove who’s really BAABUL and who’s not. Om Puri comes talking to Amitabh saying, “I told u old traditions can never be wrong. Told u not to bring the widow to the marriage.” However Amitabh just says that, “Don’t insult my son’s death by saying this.’ and walks away.
While Hema Malini try’s to find Avinash in Ansh, Amitabh actually starts thinking about how to bring back life into Rani. Cuz he simply believes that only breathing is not life, life is much more then that. Rajat (John Abraham) who we do see in the early part of the film actually disappears and settles in Europe after Rani’s wedding to Salman. Why? Well guess what Rajat actually was in love with Rani from the beginning but never tells her. However Amitabh goes to Europe to meet him, and convinces him to return back to India to meet Rani and to help him bring back her smile, and even to take his son’s place in her life. John returns back home and Rani is happy thinking that her friend has returned. However she becomes very upset when she figures out that he is here so he can take Salman’s place in her life. However then John finally tells her that he had always loved her, and that he’s not here to give her the sympathy of love, but rather he wants that sympathy of love from her. Amitabh also talks to her, and soon Amitabh sets a date for them to get married
BUT on the wedding date, Om Puri comes and gives a big lecture about traditions and family values and tries to stop the wedding. But our center man Amitabh gives his views about traditions and values and LIFE. Amitabh makes Om Puri realize that, all these years he had remembered his traditions and so called values but didn’t remember to wipe his own sister-in-law’s tears all these years.” Finally the wedding continues and Rani and her biological dad allow Amitabh to do her ‘Kaniyadaan”
ACTORS------All the actors are splendid, and they are enough realistic that we can relate to them. Those who didn’t like Vivah there is a good chance that u’ll like this film. Amitabh and Rani of course have the most on screen time and they both showcase there emotions with such heart that tears are bound to drop from ur eyes. Salman is a complete romantic. There is not much to his role but he’s a pleasure to watch in his part. John does better in the second half of the film First half the audience is in love with Salman so John gets over shadowed beside Salman. However in the second half in his 2 songs he’s spectacular. Hema Malini also brings her charm to the film. But this film defiantly belongs to Amitabh and Rani.
For those who’ve been singing songs to traditions and values after vivah should watch this film. People are saying how our youth are forgetting our culture and so forth. Well u know love marriages wouldn’t have such a bad reputation in country like India if the older generation were willing to think little beyond traditions. Change with arrogance is wrong I agree, but change with good insight and ur heart in the right place can never be wrong even if century old traditions are standing against it.
A RAVI CHOPRA FILM
