Badde Miyan Chotte Miyan

Hi guys.

This is probably my first review on MouthShut since I became a member here as I feel this place deserved some justice done to it.

BADE MIYAN...

My dad & mom introduced me to Bade Miyan when I was barely a toddler way back in the mid-late 70s. Those days arabs used to order food from Bade Miyan into nearby hotels and they loved it. The chicken tikka, masala seena [chest], masala tangdi [leg] and my all time favourite garama garam Baida Roti. ahaaa!! I can still remember the taste of Bade Miyan’s baida roti in my mouth. I can never forget it. If you go to Bade Miyan DEFINITELY try Baida Roti or you will miss out on world class cuisine.

For those who dont know what Baida Roti is... Thick Roti is coated in egg and fried to make this tasty dish. Then fill Baida Roti with anything you like... Chicken, Mutton, Veg...

In those days we used to go on my dad’s vespa 150 and eat on it. Since not many had cars in those days, ppl would come and stand and eat and enjoy Bade Miyan’s classy food. Baida Roti would cost a mere 2.5 Rupees and Chicken Tikka...3-5rupees. Hah!! Those were the days... almost 30yrs back.

But recently when I went to Bade Miyan after a long long gap of almost 15 years, I was neither too disappointed nor too happy. Bade Miyan is struggling to survive I feel.

When I went somewhere around Jan 2006 with a Paki friend, they had occupied a huge empty space just opp. their stall. But later when I went again in Feb 2006, that place had been locked up. God knows what may have happened.

The food quality, as many old timers may have noticed, actually has deteriorated since the years. At least that is what I felt myself. At both times I ordered only and only CHICKEN BAIDA ROTI and it was a little harder than normal. Usually baida roti as made in Lebanon or Gulf region is very soft and Bade Miyan made it that way years back. The Roti has to be so soft that it should be like a thin membrane and all the chicken filling from inside should fall out. That is real BAIDA ROTI. I remember the last time I ate Baida Roti was at the Muscat Festival 2000 in Muscat, Oman where I spent 7 glorious ass-rigging years.

Try Bade Miyan out once at least if you are in Bombay. If you are a Bombayite, then I dont need to tell you. Since you are already a regular there. Hehe!!!
