Bajaj Auto is the second largest two wheeler company. After capturing the Power Segment, now Bajaj’s eyes are on the Performance segment. Performance sector was completely in control of the Hero-Honda, from the time of introduction of Splendor. But in the last two year, TVS with its Victor and Bajaj with Boxer are making in roads into Hero-Honda’s territory.
Victor and Boxer along with Splendor comes into 110cc. But a lot of consumer, going after the Performance segment are either college students or people who uses their bike just for commuting, no passion for driving. Now BYK, is totally dedicated to this segment.
BYK, is made quite stylish. Though small, it has the look of Pulsar. But the small stylish look, is what a lot of college student want. BYK, has a 100cc horizontal single cylinder engine. A lot of expert believe that horizontally engine really does provide a better mileage!. When compared to other 100cc(say CD100), it is supposed to provide 100km/l*. It provides you with 6.2 BHP of power, though CD100 provides with 6.8BHP.
Test Ride :
I took the BYK for an Test Drive, for 8kms, in the city roads. Because of the location of the Retailer, the BYK has to start up to a 40 Degree Steep Rise. Failed at the height I had to shift to 3rd Gear, then back to second just to get through the Steep, 6.2BHP seem inadequate. On normal road, from 2nd to 4th gear it had a very good Pick-Up, when pulled, it made 20-60 in 7secs. That’s when its is pulled, and from the look of it I suspect it can’t do 90kmph. Although, I’m not convinced with BYK’s speedometer. Its very smooth though on 40-50kmph. The balance of BYK, I felt is very good, but they should consider wider tires(currently, 17inch). Drums brakes are more than enough. The BYK I felt is very light, and very very maneuverable. On a long ride, the seat is good and the high handle make the whole experience quite wonderful. The electronics, though standard are good for all necessary functions. Headlights, are quite effective as well.

Overall :
Excellent Bike, if you want a totally Performance oriented bike, and one that will never hurt your or more importantly your parents pocket. And if the parents pocket won’t hurt, they can be easily persuaded to buy, isn’t it? Maintenance not know, currently. But this BYK is definitely for the pocket.
