Bike for mileage,After all mileage isnt everything

I purchased my Discover 125cc Disc version in 2011 for a price tag of Rs.57, 000 in Chennai

Actually I preferred Honda Shine initially, as it looked well built and from Honda. But hence it’s delivery time and demand and FE diluted me to focus on Bajaj Discover 125. I did a test drive initially, but since it was my very first bike in my life, I really had no idea how a bike should be, ride quality, comfort, gear shift easiness, braking ability, etc. All I wanted was a bike with mileage. It’s been almost 3.5 years and still Im using this bike. But I find lots of problems with this 3 years old.

This was my first bike in my life that too I learned riding a bike and obtained license using this. Despite of having love for this bike, this bike has n number of problems. Major problems that I’m facing right now are

Cons:

  1. Bike Auto-Choke(A Major failure feature in Bajaj) never works, at times, it goes mad and never returns from high RPMs. I now drive without choke, hence have increased my idling speed at the cost of fuel

  2. Battery died in just 2.5 years with more than 15km in odo:-x

  3. Shifting gears, at many times the gear stucks in between lets say 3 to 4 or vice versa, and the gear will be in neutral with high rev sound blasting:-(

  4. False neutrals, always exists:-(

  5. At times, you never feel the click when you shift, meaning, you wouldnt know whether you have up-shifted or down-shifted gears:-(

  6. Too much of vibes, meaning when you hit 40Kmph+, you will get all vibes conducted from handle bar to your foot pegs. Worst, try speeding beyond 60. I constantly couldnt drive at 60 with this bike, just too much of vibes, makes you so tired and want you to slow down back to 45kmph

  7. The sitting posture gives me shoulder pain if driven more than 30+ mins.

  8. Never found out the actual use of the drive control switch:-( Does it even work?.

  9. Kick a million times to get the bike to life in morning, related to poor choke issue.

Pros:

  1. Returns very good fuel efficiency, Still today it gives 70+ KM per litre, which is the only bonus I get for so many of the problems I have experienced

  2. Acceleration is good for a 125cc bike, but riding comfortably >50KMph is my dream which never came true till date.

  3. Can throw headlight without any fluctuations in this model.

Avg:

  1. Braking is okay, my Activa brakes work great still irrespective of drum

  2. Pillion ride comfort is okay

  3. Horn is okay, but squeaky

  4. >60 till 100KMph the bike takes a long way to reach. I myself have tried upto 110KMph(as per speedo) but trust me you never want yourself be in that situation for more than a sec, as this bike is not designed for that purpose.

Verdict:

Other than fuel efficiency there is nothing much to feel proud about this bike. Though it has so many flaws in design and in its mechanical parts, but since my bike desire started with this model, I still am using it. But Planning to get 200ns soon, hoping of improved braking\vibes irrespective of fuel returns. I will continue to keep this bike somewhere, only because of FE

This is all about my bike’s performance and review, it is not written in any way to offend Bajaj or other Discover 125cc users. The newer version of 125cc might have been fixed with all these flaws.

Thanks for reading.
