We went in 2nd half of June’06 to Bandipur National Park ( a package of Jungle Lodges). Bandipur is about 230 km from Bangalore on Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty highway. The road was pretty good except for the last 10 km stretch to Jungle lodges (it was better than many roads we have travelled), but in the enthusiasm, you would not feel it.
I am not a fan of package tours, but this one was a good one. Very well organized by Jungle lodges. Check in is at 12, followed by lunch - relax - a 2.5 hour safari. {We sighted a leapord wiht cubs, a couple of wild elephant groups (one group had 2 babies - 7 days old & 13 days old), gaurs, lots of deers (my daughter after some time told the guide to show something else other than deers) chitals and sambas, mongoose, peacocks and several variety of birds. }-relax - an audio visual on wildlife with snacks - camp fire & dinner - sleep time. The food was buffet type and served hot and was good. The non veg was better than veg. Next day you have option of trekking or elephant ride. At an additional cost you could choose to opt for another safari.
As we had kids we went on a drive to Gpoalswamy hills about 12 kms from the stay. It was a great drive. No souls except for the guy who collects the toll (Rs 40 for car) and the pujari of the temple at the top of the hill (the highest in Bandipur). It was a great picnic. Very strong winds and dark, gave an eerie feeling, but you would love it.
We returned back to Jungle lodge, had our breakfast and went for the domestic elephant ride. The stay was pleasant and enjoyable thanks to Jungle Lodges.
Then started the confusion and infighting. Should we go to Mudumalai (13 km away and the road is not very good) & what was tempting was that we were just 80 km from OOty) or return back to Bangalore via Shivasamudram.
We decided to cover Mudumalai & ooty in the next trip. We returned via Shivasamudram. The roads were not good, but our spirits were really high and we enjoyed the trip back to Bangalore
A trip enjoyed by children. 2 families going together would enjoy even more
