BASIC CINEMA EFFECTS
Basic Instincts is Directed by Dutch film maker Paul Verhoeven, I am going to be impartial about this film, as I feel neither pro nor against this film, just let me discuss some bubbling thoughts this movie evokes in the people who view it.
A thoroughly made visual will leave a permanent impact on the mind, I don’t know this film had beneficial effect or it has left a dark destructive virus lying dormant waiting for its trigger to start its effect.
I enjoyed this film, but there is a certain unease in myself about the type of enjoyment I felt with it, there is guilt in me which says do you enjoy these type of visuals, I use that guilt to manufacture a allegory for this film.
My allegory is CATHERINE TRAMELL (Sharon Stone) took the form of CINEMA, her role given by the director with all its twists and turns in this film actually means she is playing the role of Hollywood, the movies, the cinema.
Detective Nick Curran is in the role of us viewers, if Catherine is sure with her knowledge, Nick is disturbed and deeply effected with Catherine but he is suspicious of her, like we the audience are suspicious of CINEMA. As I said the director did give so many twists in the film, there are so many clichés explored, so let me add Catherine as the movies, cinema, she is a writer, she is being questioned by Nick and his team, but she knows many things about Nick, like he used to smoke, like he used Cocaine in his past, he had problems with internal affairs, he used to have drinking problems, she knows most of the past about Nick his shooting and she is using that knowledge to make Nick become helpless, enticed, aroused and loose his sense of judgment, become reckless and once again resort to risk taking and she is doing all this successfully.
Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) becomes so much taken with Catherine Tramell, he starts copying her during his interrogation, he is using her words and her tricks over his questioners, he beings to sound like Catherine, he is surprised to see himself saying things he heard Catherine say.
In the beginning there is a brutal Ice-Pick murder, Catherine Tramell is a suspect, she is being filmed by police team during her questioning, they ask her why people are dying in the same way she wrote in her books, she replies very candidly not only this she starts writing a new novel about detectives, so the film keeps twisting and turning with Nick becoming involved with Catherine, he shot a tourist in his past and those mistakes start resurfacing in him. The sessions with Dr.Beth Garner are turning more and more tense, Dr.Beth is a part time lover of Nick even that is going nowhere, the exchanges are turning more and more heated and explosive, there is another twist of ROXY, she is out to take revenge from Nick for taking Catherin’s attention, the Assistant to Nick sees all the signs and asks nick to pull back and keep on the right track.
I always laugh at intimate scenes shown regularly in movies, I say to myself, these scenes are put here to reassure us the viewers that the actors are capable of doing it all, otherwise film makers fear that we the audience will think these guys do not know how to do it ? Anyway whatever the reason there may be, or some higher purpose is there for these naked visuals which my crude sense fail to grasp, or the purpose of this struggle is to teach us ? I know animals are less intelligent than humans and they are doing all right without being taught by CINEMA.
There are so many open and explicit scenes in this film, it required special permission from the Prime Minister of India to screen this film, otherwise this film was banned by Film Censor Board of India. Sharon Stone is very beautiful, her nose and her eyes are particularly attractive, she has a tingle in her voice. Jeanne Tripplehorn and Leilani Sarelle virtually created a glut of BEAUTIFUL faces in this movie. The success of this movie is due to these 2 beautiful women, who really supported this movie very well.
If you look at this film with the cleverly devised allegory you may not be disappointed with the discovery of another Ice-Pick under the bed in the end.
