For the past 3 days; our INDIAN TV CHANNELS; aired no news other than ABHINAV BINDRA’s beijing olympics 2008 gold medal win. I just can’t understand why our MEDIA and our PEOPLE are rejoicing so much for just a single medal in the tournament.
I agree; it is a proud thing for us that an INDIAN winning a gold medal. But I think we are so much satisfied with that single gold medal while countries like CHINA; which is also a developing country like us is winning many gold medals and keeping quiet at their home. From a country like INDIA which has around 1billion people; we are able to produce only 1 gold medalist.
This is not a moment to rejoice. This is a moment to think. Why we are not able to achieve in olympics like china. I won’t take USA for comparison; because you can immediately argue that USA is a well developed country in terms of infrastructure for sports development activities. But CHINA is a developing country like us. How they are able to achieve this? This is the time for our government to act. Our government should allocate sufficient amount of capital for the infrastructure development of sports activities. We are just concentrating only on CRICKET which is nothing but a waste of time and money. Just compare the wealth of cricketers with their performance.
They definitely doesn’t deserve this kind of attention. Another problem lies with the mindset of typical INDIAN PARENTS. Even if they find that their son/daughter is interested in taking sports as a career; they are not allowing it due to their studies. This is not the case in countries like china where the parents are ready to admit their child in to the sports academy at the age of 10 itself. For INDIAN sports people sports is one of their professions; but for chinese sports people it is their only profession. This is the right time to think about this issue; until then we have to be complacent with 1 or 2 medals in the coming years.
