Self-study ? The success of books like ?Who moved my cheese? points to change as the one constant factor in a rapidly changing world. For those in technical or creative jobs especially, you have to learn continuously ? and while on the job. ?Learn what you need to? is one of the most important habits to cultivate. Of course, as in any other thing, the teachers can only encourage it ? a lot of it has to be actively followed up by the student himself/herself.
Creativity ? While creativity and individuality are emphasized in many arts and design courses, they are no less important in any other profession that you choose. In fact, the creative aspect of that profession is what probably attracted you to it in the first place. This is something that probably won?t be put to test in any exam but will ultimately decide your success or failure.
Solving real-world problems ? While college is a world away from the real world, it is very, very important to know and solve real world problems. It not only gives you a feel of what is important but also lets you find out where your skills and interests lie.
A passion for your work ? While this is something that just cannot be taught but having good teachers helps. Why ? ? because a subject is only as interesting as the teacher. I?ve seen dead classrooms with whispering students and droning lectures. It hardly paves the way for professional brilliance.
People skills ? Wherever you are, you do need the basic skills of dealing with bosses, colleagues, assistants, students etc. Learning to stand up for yourself, dealing with competition, work-related stress, speaking out on the right issues and knowing when to shut up can all be equally important. Easier said than done though!
Money management ? Loans, taxes, expenses, savings, salary negotiations ? realities of life that a person has to tackle. Not only for those who take to business, but for any other professionals too ? many of whom are often at sea with money matters.
A sense of responsibility ? for the people, society and environment - by raising socially relevant issues ? and actually thinking of tackling them.
