If you are looking at a solid Two hours of Investment to Laughter, I recommend Bend It Like Beckham!!!I happened to watch the movie yesterday and finally I might add. After literally tearing my hair apart, I managed 4 tickets for an evening show at the I-Max. Now, I will talk of the I-Max experience in another forum;but I was not disappointed.
The story of an Indian family in London & their cultural tiffs with all that we in India adhere to may seem like old wine in new bottle. But the freshness in the movie radiates in choosing the theme yes, the theme & believe it or not its Football ( or Soccer ) in particular & sports in general. The shock effect comes from the female lead aka Jess Bhambra & her fight to choose between the heart & the head!!!
Add to that the love story thrown in where she falls for the Irish coach & we have what we call in Bollywood as the Masala Potboiler.
I must admit here that the movie is actually for two hours. And the Bally Sagoo remix is good on the ears. The punjabi wedding as the outer plot of the movie is an absolute masterpiece!!! Who can resist the colour & the joi de vivre of the wedding!
Bend it Like Beckham also touched me at an intrinsic level to the effect that it reminded me of my school days & the tiffs that used to be regular occurance at my household when it came to sports in general. Nothing much has changed as we, in india, still consider sports a pastime & are unwilling to accept sportsperson(s) except Cricket!!!!
Im sure anybody going into the movie will come out feeling good & rooting for the lead protagonists!!!
Lastly, just two words WATCH IT!
