IT, S ALMOST a David vs.Goliath tussle Devdas and Bend it like beckham clash at the box-office on July 12. While Devdas is a 50 crore venture featuring bollywood superstars, BILB is produced on a shoestring budget (by UK standards) with no stars whatsoever. Yet, surprisingly, BILB seems to be creating more excitement among many cinebuffs.
Reason? Devdas is a loser`s tale that was trashed by international critics at the Cannes fest, while BILB grossed over 2 million at the UK box-office in its opening weekend alone and won rave reviews from Guardian, The Mirror and THe Times. And while BILB promises to be a thoroughly peppy affair and brings back good old memories of Moonsoon weeding, Devdas raises but the obvious question-will the viewers tolerate a slurring, over-the top Shah Rukh Khan?
Who is interesting in watching a loser who pines, pines and pines away for his lost love and hits the bottle. I was earlier excited about the film, but after reading the Cannes reviews and seeing BILB`S fun trailers, I`m rooting for the latter now.
According to model tuened actor Jas Arora, viewers are sick and tired of run-of-the mill stuff. Not many are interested in watching just songs and dances, and designer sets and garments anymore. Fresh as BILB rather than Devdas which simply doesn`t fit into the present cult. I can`t imagine Shah Rukh Khan playing Devdas and Aishwariya doing paro`s role. Devdas is a story that has inspired two films before anyway.
But wait, there`s still hope for Devdas. For there are many die hard fans of madhuri dixit, Aishwariya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan who won`t certainly like to miss this ambitious flick. so What if Shah Rukh Khan plays a drunk looser in Devdas.
Bnd it like Beckham, which realeses on 12 July with Devdas, seems to have caught the glitterati`s fancy more than the 50-crore Shah Rukh Khan- starrer.
Well, Let`s see who wons!
