Berlin Syndrome is a thriller a story of a women in trouble.
Plot -
Clare(Teresa Palmer) is a young photographer who recently came to Brisbane Became friends with Andi(Max Riemelt) who is an English Teacher in Berlin and as they liked each other there happens to be instant romance between them which turns into a night of passion. The next morning she wakes up in the happy and lovely mood gets spoiled when she observes that she was locked in the sound proof apartment of his new mate and he has also stolen her sim card. She was not worried until she go through his things and finds out about his behavior. Knowing about his behavior Clare is restless and after numerous failed attempts of running away from him what will she do? Is she be able to escape?
Performance -
The performance of Teresa as a wandering girl trying to find meaning in her life which eventually turns into battle of survival against a psychopath was great which was very important for the thrill to work. The performance of Max as Andi and his distinct behavior which instantly changes from perfectly normal to absolutely freakish and still he maintains an innocent face infront of others was an awesome job. Direction by Cate Shortland was good but could have been better as the fluctuating agreement of the helpless victim with the tormentor could have attained another level.
Music and Cinematography -
Music by Bryony Marks was complementing to the situations of the story very well. Cinematography by Germain McMicking was an awesome job especially with passionate sexual experience.
Overall the movie is a must watch if you want to get thrilled. And the slow setup and sudden thrilling moments of the movie works out very well. The movie creates a strange uncanny atmosphere. Andis sudden change in moods and his brilliance with the planning of not letting her escape a dangerous combination makes the movie genuinely creepy.
