Bharat Chandran IPS - the character created by Renji Panicker for the movie COMMISSIONER in 1994 comes back after long 11 years.. to revive the career graph of Suresh Gopi, who was in hibernation for a couple of years. It was during the middle 90’s that Suresh Gopi emerged as the third super star of Malayalam cinema, through a series of action films penned by Renji Panicker - EKALAVYAN, MAFIA, COMMISSIONER, LELAM, PATHRAM etc. Renji too established himself as the firebrand mega scriptwriter, specialised in movies dealing with contemporary political scenario in the state. But both of them lost their grip a few years back, and needed a strong come back vehicle to re capture the lost throne. The new release BHARAT CHANDRAN IPS is just that! The venom spewing cop is back.....
Bharat Chandran IPS is a sequel to the box office mega hit COMMISSIONER. The climax of the earlier film saw the hero murdering the villain - the infamous Mohan Thomas - burning him alive. In the sequel, he is back after 9 years of suspended service and legal battle. It was his advocate wife Indu Kurup (Sobhana) who fought for him relentlessly and won the battle of justice in the court. But Mohan Thomas’ mercenary takes revenge and ends up slaughtering her in an attempt to exterminate Bharat. That’s about his tragic personal life.
The main plot in BHARAT CHANDRAN IPS revolves around some of the contemporary political and social incidents in Kerala – like the Marad issue, the Chekannoor Moulavi case etc. The prime baddie is Janab Hyder Ali (Saikumar) who plans to open a private port in the costal Malabar region and carry out smuggling activities, drug & weapon trafficking. To acquire land at a mean rate he organizes a riot between Hindus and Muslims in the area, with the support of Hindu religious leader Mundoor Siddhan (Balachandran Chullikkad) and silent co-operation of a gang of politicians, including the Chief Minister (Vijaya Raghavan). Hyder’s intention is to drive people away from the riot spot and later get hold of the land easily. They eliminate Mayimbram Bawa (Sri Raman), freedom fighter and honest Muslim leader. Commissioner Bharat Chandran enters the picture at this stage and the rest is history..
There is nothing unpredictable in this movie. Still Renji & Suresh Gopi never gives the audience a chance to divert their attention from the screen. As the director himself remarks, this is a two-hour tightrope action movie. It progresses in lightning-flash pace. We are provided with a feast of thundering dialogue explosion. Excellent dialogue delivery by Suresh Gopi - the best in the industry when it comes to English vocabulary. Back ground scores go well with the mood of the movie.
Altogether, BHARAT CHANDRAN IPS gives the effect of a fresh breath and rejuvenating experience. Well-done Renji Panicker, good directorial debut. Missed you all these years. I wish the duration of the movie were a little longer. And Suresh Gopi, you are the ideal angry cop.
