An Excellent Serial No More

Bharat Ek Khojwas my favourite serial. It was a superb serial whose star attraction was Om Puri. Based on Nehru’s Discovery of India, it was bringing the different facets of Indian History for mass education through healthy entertainment. Roshan Seth acting as Nehru was introducing the episode and concluding the same. Om Puri used to be the main focus, and he was playing the role wearing period costume, in a superb manner. I have not missed a single episode in this serial, because during my school days when I learnt Indian History from the teachers and the text books of pre-Independent India, I learnt many wrong things to unlearn which took a long time. The locale of shooting in each episode was most appropriate and realistic. Some episodes of Bharast Ek Khoj were running parallel with Mahabharata of Ramanand Sagar, an acknowledged expert in producing mythologies. But, Sagar’s approach was commercial. The costumes were unrealistic. Use of gimmicks was maximum. Whereas Bharat Ek Khoj was different. Well researched and well produced with a minimum cost. It is a pity such an educational serial has been discontinued. I think Prasar Bharati and Doordarshan owe an explanation to the public for discontinuing this serial.
