When a director has to take the mantle of making a sequel of a movie which had been successful and well appreciated by the paying public, his responsibility increases manifolds. More so if the aforesaid sequel had achieved a cult status like Bheja Fry!
So does the director succeeds in meeting the exceptions or even dare to surpassing the prequel? I am afraid as well as disheartened to say that the director has falter big time in making this product. After seeing the movie I can say that Bheja fry is not a franchise by its merit but due to unprecedented public appreciation for the first.
The film has lost its novelty and innocence in order to attain the ever so luring commercial viability. The first half is somewhat engaging with Bharat bhushan winning the cruise trip and his first interactions with the cruise members. The verbal spats between Vinay pathak and Suresh Menon do manage to bring a smile on your face. The movie promises to deliver something interesting at the intervel point and somewhat raises viewers expectations.
But the post interval portions leaves a lot tobe desired and viewers interest level start to fluctuate due to repetitive antics between KK and Vinay Pathak. The absenece of Ranvir Shorey is badly felt in the form of Suresh Menon who seems to fall flat in comparison to Vinays canny and hilarious taxman act.
Technically also the film leaves lot to be desired as cinematography provides the proceedings jadded and outdated look. Music by Ishq Bector is strictly average and fails to provide any impetus to the movie.
Performences by Vinay pATHAK and KK are saving grace of the movie. Vinay pathak shows the same continuity and precision in his performence which he showed in Bheja fry 4 years back, which speaks volume of his acting capabilities. But even is histrionics are hindered by a shoddy script and ordinary screenplay. KK being a seasoned actor performs his part with utmost sincerity and earnestness. But the camradrie that was palpable between Vinay and Rajat Kapoor seems to be somewhat missing. A powerhouse talent like Amol Gupte has been completely wasted in such an inconsequential role that could have been performed by any amateur with ease.
So, the sequel to bheja fry pales completely incomparison to its predecessor and can only be viewed for lead protagonists honest buffoonery act. Try if you can, to not compare this with its prequel and you may enjoy it a liitle more. This time the director served us with a bheja that is not as palpable as it was expected to be. Watch it if u have nothing to do this weekend or else wait for a dvd!
