I am still LAUGHING!

Nowadays, Bollywood scenario has changed. Biggies with multi star cast are disappointing while small low budget movies are proving to be good entertainers. Bheja Fry is the classic example of the latter. It does not have any big superstar, directors, producers, music directors all are unheard before. But though, Bheja Fry gives that entertainment which even big budget movies sometimes fail to provide. And that’s where Bheja Fry scores!

The story of the movie: Ranjeet Thandani (Rajat Kapoor) is an executive of a music company. He is arrogant and very selfish. Every Friday, he and his friends hosted a dinner party. In this dinner party, one used to bring an idiot and used to humiliate him, but in such a way that the idiot doesn’t come to know that he is being humiliated! Ranjeet’s wife Sarika, was strictly against this. For the coming Friday dinner party, Ranjeet gets one bakra-Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak). Bharat is by profession an Income Tax Officer and singing is his passion. He was a big time simpleton. Ranjeet had thought humiliating Bharat would be quite enjoyable. But everything goes haywire when Ranjeet hurts his back on Friday evening and his wife Sarika leaves him. At this point, Bharat comes to help Ranjeet, only to mess up the already messed-up things!

Bheja Fry scores in each and every aspect. The movie is just of 97 minutes and it does not get slow or uninteresting even for a moment. Direction, screenplay, music, performances, background score, everything is upto the mark.

The beginning portions were a little dull and even Vinay Pathak entry was not proper. But the asli mazaa starts when Vinay Pathak enters Rajat Kapoor. From thereon, the movie gets totally funny and the humour and the entertainment doesn’t stop. And the movie becomes better as it progresses.

Another thing, which I liked most about Bheja Fry that director Sagar Ballary, didn’t cast any big superstar for this movie. He roped in lesser-known stars for his movie. And plus, the movie became such a hit. This proves that it is not big stars that sell the movie, and that it is the content, which determine the fate of the movie!

Vinay Pathak was made for this role! He gets completely into the skin of the character and gives such a performance as his character demanded. I don’t think anyone from our film industry would have done justice to the character of Bharat Bhushan. Really, this is a performance to remember!

Rajat Kapoor, too, excels, in his role. The scenes where he tries hard to maintain his cool were really funny. Also, he maintains an important position in the movie and does not get overshadowed by Vinay Pathak’s acting. Good job, Rajat!

Sarika (last seen in Parzania) also gives a fine performance. Milind Soman as Anant Ghoshal was superb! Though he had a small role, he does a great job! I hope we get to see him in more movies! Debutant Bhairavi Goswami as Suman Rao does complete justice to her role (She strikingly resembles Bigg Boss contestant Ragini Shetty!)

Ranvir Shorey as Asif Merchant gives yet another fantastic performance! Though he was there for only 10 minutes, his performance is one of those, which you remember for a long time! Last seen in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd wherein he, too, had a short role but gave an excellent performance.

Tom Alter as the doc does a nice job. Harsh Chhaya as Rajat Kapoor’s friend gives as usual a formal performance. Iklaque Khan as Hemant Verma was okay.

Alok Haldar’s art direction was perfect. Sagar Desai’s music was okay. There were only 2 songs, one comes during the titles in the beginning and the other in the end, so songs do not hamper the pace of the movie!

Dialogues were really funny. Background score was light and in mood with the movie. Cinematography was perfect. Sagar Ballary and Arpita Chatterjee do a wonderful and a remarkable job as a writer and screenplay writer.

Sagar Ballary’s direction was excellent and I am sure he will do a great job as director/storywriter/screenplay writer. Best of Luck!

Some of the funny scenes of the movie:

  1. The scene where Rajat hurts his back

  2. The scene where Tom Alter checks Rajat Kapoor

  3. The scene where Vinay calls Milind Soman and Bhairavi Goswami

  4. All scenes of Ranvir Shorey

  5. The climax

On the whole, Bheja Fry is really well made entertainer and one of the best comedies of 2007. Not to be missed!
