Disappointment

Saw 2 interviews before release – RGV said there cannot be a story in a horror film; it should only be about the experience & JD(the main lead actor in the film) said that he was surprised at the horror effect RGV brought out through intermittent sounds amidst a lot of silence. Now I realize that both of them were telling the truth but that’s about all that can be said.

The plot is about a family plus servant plus JD’s sister who, well, really don’t do anything else but listen to strange sounds & reference to an imaginary friend Shabbu, the ghost, by the younger child. There was no pretense of a build up towards a story but even RGV must have felt the pressing need to end the film with some story else how does one end a film? The movie meanders along with no story as promised by RGV before climaxing rather quickly to the logical end i.e. demise of the Bhoot. But the only twist was in this because while all such films end with some divine intervention, RGV decided he will do things differently. So he captures the Bhoot on camera, which must be another 1st because all such films tend to show that the Bhoot cannot be captured on camera, & finally chooses to get the Bhoot burnt & ensure that both the kids in the film meet their death. Am still wondering why.

The intermittent sounds effects in the midst of long periods of silence was nice to have a couple of times but was flogged so much that it became too predictable. There was not much scope for acting except a little from the girl. Manisha has minimal role other than shouting at her daughter "Don’t talk about Shabbu again". JDs sister gets more camera focus than all others. The film is just 90 minutes so there were a few viewers in the hall wondering whether there is still more to come & ofcourse relieved to know there wasn’t more to come. Would prefer to remember RGV for great films like Shiva, Rangeela & Satya rather than this.
