ROBOTS in the Future??

“Bicentennial Man” – PG

Robin Williams stars as Andrew in “Bicentennial Man.” The story begins in the year 2005. The Martin family is getting one of the newest inventions, a household robot. The Robot (Robin Williams) is given his name when the youngest daughter (Hallie Kate Eisenberg) misunderstands the word android and calls him Andrew. Mr. Martin, played by Sam Neill, realizes after a few weeks that Andrew isn’t a ‘normal’ robot. He has the capacity to learn and to feel. Mr. Martin decided to start teaching Andrew everything he knows and exposing him to books galore.

The movie spans many years when Andrew loses someone to death. He doesn’t understand why he has to live to see everyone he loves die. This starts his quest to become Human.

Brilliantly written by Isaac Asimov, this film dives into the not so distant future with robots working and living with us. For an unbelievable story line, this movie really had me feeling for Andrew. “Bicentennial Man” was directed by Chris Columbus of “Home Alone” and “Mrs. Doubtfire” fame.

Robin Williams was absolutely fantastic! His transformation from a regular robot to a robot with feelings was astounding. His usual comedic genius was replaced with heartfelt acting. Oliver Platt was also a definite asset to this movie. I loved the endearing way his character acted towards Andrew.

I’m not sure if we’ll ever live to see a story like this one proceed into reality, but it was definitely interesting to think about. I would recommend this movie to others!

Enjoy!
