Shop till you drop

What you see – A favorite shoppingdestination of families and friends, the four-storied shopping mall BigBazaar in Vizag is large and imposing in its trademark orange and bluecolors. The front here is marked by both entry and exit glass doorsthat open inwards into five billing counters in the center, flanked bygoods and appliances on all sides. Elevators, escalators and aspiraling staircase take you to the upper levels.

What you get – Big Bazaar in Vizag gives youalmost everything under the sun, usually with a discount tag attached. The ground floor here predominantly has household and kitchenappliances that range from steel, aluminum and copper utensils, non-stick cookware, microwave proof containers, cutlery to plasticitems in casseroles, food-boxes, water bottles, buckets, etc. Thisfloor also houses branded auto accessories, silver items (like pujathalis), branded sunglasses, cosmetics, luggage and home accessories and decorative items like vases, ceramic ware, glassware, crockery, porcelain showpieces, Feng Shui items, wind chimes, dry flowers, etc.

On the first floor are Big Bazaar’s counters for women’s clothing (bothWestern and Indian ethnic wear from office wear tops and trousers andcasual T-shirts to sarees, salwar kameez sets and kurtis); a wide rangeof kids’ clothing for both boys and girls; curtains (in fabric andreadymade), carpets, fashion accessories, gold jewelry and Big Bazaar’slatest venture – a unisex beauty salon called Star Sitara. The secondfloor carries men’s branded wear, sportswear, footwear, leather goodsand mobile accessories, and the third has modular and compressed woodfurniture (a rather nice car-bed for kids at Rs. 12, 999), electronics, home appliances, and even stationery. The top-most floor at Big Bazaaris a housewife’s dream, as other than personal care products, beveragesand a range of groceries, we see a large section for fresh vegetablesand fruits. The food counters (Chinese, South Indian and North Indiancuisines) too are here.

Our verdict – Big Bazaar in Vizag is an idealand convenient choice for families shopping for clothes, groceries, appliances, jewelry, toys, etc. But MetroMela suggests you step outonly when you intend to shop at leisure, as the mall is really largeand makes use of all available space, albeit a bit randomly. So youneed to have lots of time to peruse the goods. In fact, we sight quitea bit of stuff in the most unlikely corners like a quaint three-tiered, cane lamp costing Rs. 3, 295, some handy aluminum stepladders from Rs.2, 299 onwards and a foldaway stool for Rs. 399. Big Bazaar also hasample counters for billing and enough sales staff to assist you at allcounters. Parking space is limited.
