I am currently pursuing MS (Graduate Research Assistant) in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Utah in Dept. of Metallurgical Engineering , USA.
I passed out from Bihar Institute of Technology, Sindri, Dhanbad, Jharkhand in July 2004 from the Dept of Chemical Engineering. As I myself have lived in BIT I can very well explain my experineces in BIT.
BIT Sindri is in Dhanbad which comes under Dept of Science and Technology , Govt. of Jharkhand. It has really very big and equipped campus (About 700 Acres) which none of the BANGALORE UNIVERSITY or VTU engg colleges is currently having(They dont have even 50% of the land that we are having). It comes under Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.
Education level is quite high in this college as there are lots of foriegn educated faculties (Like from MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, U of Washington, Caltech etc) which I think none of the VTU University engg colleges are having that in no. currently.
As it is the single quite good govt engg college in Jharkhand, the govt is not willing to release it and make it autonomous. Thats the reason why it remains in Govts hand and why its not that popular. But for your kind information BIT Sindri was the 1st IIT to be made in India which the Govt later on Cancelled and made IIT Kgp the 1st IIT.
Lots of people are going to IIMs and also going to US/Canada for MS/PhD or MBA. Though campus selection is not very high, the students after passing, most of them go to PSUs and I think everybody knows how difficult is it to go to PSUs. There are lots of BIT guys in PSUs.
BIT provides ample platform for personality development. Lots of clubs are there in BIT to provide variety of platforms. Some of them are Leo Club, Rotract Club, GRS, ISTE etc. Competition is quite tough as getting admission is quite tough here as a large pool ( about 100000) of State Engg applicants fight for those 350 seats.
See about 30 students appeared for GRE last year and 28 of them got call with full aid even some of them with University fellowships and 2 with 50% aid So I think this gives some sense to the persons who are comparing BIT with Bangalore Engg Colleges or education level in Bihar.
