Bihar Institute of Technology has a history spanning half a century. It was founded in 1949 under the name of College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Patna. After one year it was shifted to Sindri on 17th November 1950 and thus was born BIT Sindri with a Principal, three Professors and sixty Students.
Now it is located in Sindri which is an hour drive from Dhanbad, the coal capital of India. During the initial years, the college had diploma programs in these two disciplines of Engineering.
In 1952, degree programs were introduced. The next important date in the Institutes history is 1956, when its name was changed to Bihar Institute of Technology, the name it has retained till today. Over the years, several other degree programs in various other branches of Engineering were added.
The institute is controlled administratively by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Bihar, Patna and academically it is affiliated to Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag for conducting examinations and awarding degrees.

Ceramics Engineering was closed in 1991. Architectural Engineering is also discontinued.
The Institute can boast of the best infrastructure and facilities among other institutes of the same kind in the State of Bihar. Each branch has its own building within the sprawling campus. They have huge and well established labs. Some departments also have their own libraries and computer facilities.
This institute is fully residential. Professors quarters and hostels are also present on campus, giving it the feel of one big close-knit community. The on-campus student housing consists of 20 hostels, which can accomodate 2000 students at a time.
There are many clubs in the institute that provide a forum for the extra-curricular expressions of the students. Some of these are Sarjana (the college magazine), the Rotaract Club, the Leo Club, the Arts Club, the Gandhi Rachnatmak Samiti, the Model Club and the Film Club, among others. They organize various intra- and inter- college events from time to time.
The campus also has an auditorium, a library, a canteen, a gymnasium, a playground, a basketball court, a tennis court, a branch of the State Bank of India, a post office, an STD/ISD phone booth and a co-operative store for the benefit of the students and the staff.
The Sindri Town railway station is also a stones throw away from the campus. There is a shuttle service between campus and Dhanbad four times a day. The other means of transportation to the campus is by trekkers and minibuses, which have most hostels on their route.

Admission Procedure
Admissions in the institute is through the BCECE (Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination) conducted by Department of Science and Technology, Government of Bihar IAS Sangh Bhavan, Near Patna Airport.all Engineering, Medical, Dental and Agriculture examinations are now conducted jointly. This exam is conducted in the month of June. Advertisements regarding the date and time of the examination and availability of application forms are posted in the leading newspapers of the state.
Each year around a 300+ students are admitted to this institute through this entrance examination.
Few seats at Sindri are also reserved for nominated candidates from North East India, Punjab, Haryana, Kashmir
