Recently my relative had been admitted to the hospital for a surgery. Relatives spouse had taken all precautions in advance and checked with the Hospital Admin and support staff if all arrangements for the surgery had been made for which the response was in the affirmative.
The patient was taken to the operation theatre next day in the morning. While the operation was being performed the Hospital authorities call the patients spouse (who is the only attendant )to fetch Blood from the Blood Bank of its other hospital in Aminijikarai (another part of the city.) They insisted this had to be done immediately before the operation is completed.They mentioned that the Blood Bank has been advised already and it will be ready for collection.
The patient and I rush in morning traffic to the other side of the city to be told that we need to pay for the blood since it is a different operating unit (!) and it will take 45 minutes since some matching tests needs to be done before it is provided to us. The staff in the blood bank could not understand our frustration and was impolite and rude. Over and above this she threatened that she will not provide us the blood if we air our frustration.
The attitude shown by Kaliappa Hospital, R.A.Puram, Chennai and the staff in Billroth Hospital Aminijikari is absolutely unprofessional and worth highlighting for consumer awareness and preparedness.
