Its tricky, so listen carefully.
BITS admits based on performance in 12th standard exams. They normalize the scores of everyone relative to the topper in the exam. So if the topper got 300 out of a maximum of 1200 marks, then 300 is made 100%. So if you get 150, you have 50%. By normalizing, they are able to compare the application of someone from Assam with that of someone from Karnataka.
Having done that for all our states (however many they are), they establish a ranking of each applicant. People get accepted based on their rank to their preferred prorgams.
The trick comes on where BITS has A group and B group degree programs. So careful as you fill your application...
A is mostly engineering. Once there, you are stuck with that program. B group is all MSc (Hons) degrees in pute sciences (phys, chem, math, etc.). The tricky thing is that all B group people are also assured a SECOND DEGREE from A group based on performance at the end of the first year. They end up spending 5 years but get two degrees. One in pure science and one in engg.
The thing is if your score is not so high that you get the engg degree of your pref. then you are better off applying for a B grou preference before an A group degree which youdont like much. At the end of first year, if you do decent enough, you will get the A group degree you want anyways.
