Is Bittoo Boss another wedding movie like Band Baaja Baaraat? Or a small town love story like Tanu Weds Manu? On seeing the posters, these thoughts are inevitable. So what is Bittoo Boss about? More importantly, is it worth your time and money?
Bittoo Boss is the story of Bittoo(Pulkit Samrat) a small town adept wedding videographer passionate about his work. He faces the pertinent question that ails our times. Do what you love and compromise on the money or get in to the big league by compromising on values. The heart-head dilemma withstanding, litmus test circumstances unfold to help him find his feet.
A story that will resound with the youth has a delightful introduction and a few well executed emotional scenes. An enjoyable first half brings Bittoo to the point of introspection. And then, it falters. The second half, has too many problems to solve, which are solved one at a time giving you 3 climaxes(I really thought oh this is the end!). A single, high octane climax would have worked magically. A shorter narrative clipping 25-30 minutes off the 2.47 hour movie would have made it crisper and engaging throughout.
Pulkit Samrat makes a dynamite debut. He proves his finesse at acting and dancing. Amita Pathak(Mrinalini) is good in parts as Bittoo’s love interest.
Maneesh Chandra Bhatt’s cinematography familiarizes you with the local flavor of a small town in Punjab. Baylon Finseca’s sound score is apt while Raghav Sachar’s songs though enjoyable, won’t be party smashers. Editor Abhishek Seth and Gautam Mehra’s screenplay and dialogues could shoulder some responsibility for a stretched second half.
Debut writer director Supavitra Babul wins in parts. He deserves kudos for a contemporary story, few beautifully executed scenes and a fantastic performance by Pulkit Samrat. With a tighter script and better storytelling, Supavitra Babul would have had a dream debut. So then, is it worth your time and money? Yes, if you won’t bother with nitty-gritty’s for a film which has its heart in place!
Watch for: A candid directorial debut.
Watch out for: Pulkit Samrat’s power packed performance.
Don’t watch if: Slow paced movies are not your thing. You can’t survive without high voltage drama.
