In addition to all the other reviews, I just wanted to add some comments:
-I was happy that there were no songs in this movie. I cant understand why everyone expects Bollywood movies to have a full CDs worth of singing and dancing. Why is that a criteria on which movies are judged? Are all Bollywood movies supposed to be Musicals? Dont forget that all this singing and dancing around trees in Bollywood movies is a rip off of ooold English musicals. No one does that any more -- its passe. I think its time to move on. Instead of bursting into song every ten minutes, theres always incidental music and background music. So thats one thing I respect about this movie -- It was bold of them.
-I found the style exaggerated. Maybe it was supposed to look that way -- the family in the movie is supposed to be wealthy. But I think the audience would have connected better with the character had the settings been more down to earth.
-I found other things silly. Why did Amitabhs character need to shout at the girl when he knew she couldnt hear him? Why did he use sign language (without her holding his hands) if he knew she couldnt see? I guess it was more for the benefit of the audience.
-Great camera movements, angles, shots, fades, blurs etc. The director seems to like certain shots, eg those dusty shots with sunbeams. I like that kind of stuff in a movie.
But although the movie was a little bit on the dull/unrealistic side overall, I think it is a step in the right direction for Bollywood movies. Im looking forward to the next Bollywood movie not involving a Hero, heroine and villan, a mother crying when her son is fighting and getting beaten up and where they dance around trees for no reason and ending happily ever after.
