Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has had films such as ?Khamoshi-The Musical?, ?Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam? and ?Devdas?, to his credit is back with his latest film, ?Black?.The story of this film sounds a bit like, Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s earlier film, ?Khamoshi?, but when you see this one, you realise that this one is different in its own right.Bollywood has never tackled the issue of blindness, so seriously, ever before, and this is one such film which explains that how life can be made beautiful, even when it`s black.
Applause Entertainments.?Black?, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, stars Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Shernaz Patel, Dhritiman and a child artiste, Ayesha Kapoor. This film has been making news ever since it has been launched, due to its different story and the talented star cast. So, how has the film shaped up?Read on?
?Black? revolves around Michelle McNally (Ayesha Kapoor who grows up as Rani Mukherjee), a deaf and a blind girl, whose life is completely black. She cannot see anything, she cant talk to anyone and nor can she interact with anyone.
Darkness always surrounds her, everywhere. Her mother (Shernaz Patel) and her father Paul McNally (Dhritiman), want to find her a tutor who can teach her the ways of life.
Michelle out of frustration can get very destructive at times, and for this cause her parents are willing to get a tutor for her, and fortunately, they find one such person for her.The tutor is Debraj Sahai (Amitabh Bachchan), who specializes in teaching blind and deaf people.
Debraj and Michelle get along very well, and a certain amount of understanding develops between them. When Michelle grows up, Debraj wants her to join a college and for that cause, she has to pass in an exam.Debraj tries his best to teach Michelle.
He works very hard on her, day and night, and finally Michelle takes the exam, but sadly, she fails in it, leaving Debraj disappointed.Debraj gets angry with her and then due to this failure, Michelle finds a killer instinct in herself. She wants to be something. She wants her tutor Debraj to be proud of her and she starts working very hard.
Michelle starts excelling in studies and starts gaining knowledge but another tragedy starts to take place.Debraj, by now starts turning blind. He finds out that he is suffering from Alzheimer`s disease.when Michelle`s sister is about to get married, Debraj tells Michelle how a man kisses a woman when they get married. As poor Michelle knows that due to the ?black? element, she can never get a chance to do so, she asks Debraj to kiss her. After refusing several times, Debraj finally gives in and kisses Michelle, which embarrasses him a lot.
For this purpose, Debraj leaves the town and returns after 12 years. Now, the whole situation has reversed.Debraj completely loses his memory, and Michelle who is then, a skilled and a qualified girl takes this uphill task of teaching Debraj.
Amitabh Bachchan is awesome as Mr.Sahai.He has been there since so many years in Bollywood and we call hima legendary actor, but after watching this film, you will ask yourself that where was this Amitabh Bachcan, since so many years.
Amitabh Bachchan has redefined himself as an actor, through this film. You must have seen Amitabh Bachcan, as an angry young man, in his earlier films. You must have seen him as a strict school principal in ?Mohabbatein?, or as a loving father in ?Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham? or even as a police inspector in ?Khakee? or ?Dev?, but you have certainly not seen the Amitabh Bahchcan of this film.
This is a new Big B, altogether. He excels in the scenes, where he first convinces Michelle`s mother that he can help Michelle, when she is a small girl and then in the scene, in which he is disappointed when Michelle fails in her exam.A clapworthy performance.
If that wasn`t enough then, Rani Mukherjee, is also no less. She has almost no dialogue in this film, but her eyes says it all.Her face expressions says it all. When she is angry, you can see that frustration on her face. When she is sad, you can see that pain in her eyes.
Even without speaking she has said so much. This is a very different Rani Mukherjee, from the glamorous one, whom you saw in ?Chalte Chalte?, etc. This is one such film, she can always be proud of.Infact Bhansali has always extracted wonderful performances from his actresses.Be it Manisha Koirala in ?Khamoshi?, be it Aishwarya Rai in ?Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam? or ?Devdas? and now Rani Mukherjee.Rani is amazing in the scene, when her sister`s in-laws come for a dinner and then in the climax scene, when she gives a speech through her sign language when she becomes a graduate.
Ayesha Kapoor as the young Michelle is also no less. One wonders how a 10 year old girl can perform so well. She is an extremely talented child.Shernaz Patel also shines, as Michelle`s mother. She has carried off the role of the mother of a blind and deaf girl, brilliantly.others, in the supporting cast, are also equally good.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back again with this film.He has opened a new way for Bollywood. He is a sensible director, who does not need to make his actresses strip for making his movie a success.
He has tackled with a different subject and fortunately, has hit the bull`s eye.Making a film, such as this one is not a walk in the park.
There are some brilliantly executed scenes. The scenes when Debraj Sahai begins to teach Michelle and an understanding develops between them, will touch your heart. The scenes, where there are constant arguments between Debraj Sahai and Michelle`s father, Paul, are interesting, especially the scene, where Debraj Sahai tries to teach Michelle how to eat and the argument which then follows between Sahai and Paul. The scene, where Michelle speaks out for the first time, is brilliantly executed.
Another scene, which will touch your heart, and will fill your eyes with tears is the one in which Michelle gives an interview to the principal of a university and explains what knowledge means to her. That scene is not to be missed!
The scene in which Michelle asks Debraj to kiss her, is another interesting scene, which has been shot beautifully, and you actually feel very sad for Michelle. You can also relate with Debraj`s character, when he is embarrassed, after that kiss. The climax is also clapworthy.
Screenplay is amazing. The film is so gripping that you won`t even get a chance to blink your eyes, even for a second.Editing is crisp.Though, the film is very slow, but it`s not a drag and the slow pace is very important for films such as this one.Dialogues are clapworthy.
In such a film there are two factors which can make it a success:Number 1, is acting and number 2, is dialogues, and luckily, this film is excellent in both these two important factors.
Cinematography is first-rate and this film has a very international look, which makes this film look even more beautiful.
