Blow is a real life story about George Jung, currently serving a jail sentence in America for possession of 100kg of marijuana. The story is told via voiceover, a technique that was used most notably in Goodfellas (a far superior film).
The film is set in the 60’s and tells how George Jung (Johnny Depp), then a young man, grows up vowing to escape the poverty that he suffered during his youth, even though his dad was a decent hard working man. At the time there was a drug use boom so George decides supplying Marijuana is a good start if he’s going to make his fortune.
Before long he is one of the biggest dealers on the West Coast. After a while his lifestyle lands him in jail where he meets some very shady characters all after the same, quick money and an easy life. Once outside he gets together with his ex cellmate and they start importing cocaine from South America.
Even though he become very wealthy and marries the gorgeous Mirtha (Penelope Cruz), he still isn’t happy. Even after the birth of his daughter he still continues importing and before long he is back in jail.
On his release he thinks that one last scam will set him and his daughter up for life. Unfortunately is doesn’t work out that way.
The story itself isn’t that good and quite predictable, although it does start off quite well. At over 2 hours it does go on a bit, and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re a Johnny Depp fan.
