If you suffer from insomnia, this film is just for you! The film has an excellent cast, a competent director, an impressive technical team… but alas! Blufmaster is like a big balloon with a leak!
Roy (Abhishek) is a small-time con man who’s ready to leave it all behind him and get married to Simmi (Priyanka). On his engagement day with Simi, Roy’s reality is exposed in front of her entire family. The engagement is called off and Roy is left pining for Simi’s love.
In the meantime, Roy meets another connie. This junior connie, name Dittu (Ritesh Deshmukh), tries unsuccessfully to bluff Roy. He later becomes Roy’s chela. While Roy is trying to regain Simi’s love, he comes to know a shocking truth. He has brain tumor. His doctor, Dr. Bhalerao (Boman Irani), says he has just three months left to live. When Roy tells Simi this truth, she thinks he is playing another one of his tricks to get her back. A serene and spurned Roy decides to live his remaining life to the fullest.
He wants to pull off one last big con on Chandru Parekh (Nana Patekar), who made Dittu’s father a pauper after conning the old man. Dittu wants to even the score with Chandru by conning him in return. Roy teaches Dittu the tricks of the game and the two manage to dupe Chandru of crores. But Chandru won’t go down so easily .
The basic plot of the film is interesting and the makers have tried to make the proceedings look different from the run-of-the-mill types. It couldve been one wacky entertainer. Alas! What couldve been a roller coaster ride with several riveting moments turns out to be such a hotchpotch. The fault clearly lies in its screenplay. Though slapdash by nature , the film starts off pretty well. The first few reels are ordinary, but the story does turn interesting when Abhishek is caught up .The second half has some more shortcomings in terms of scripting. The Nana Patekar track, which keeps coming up at regular intervals, is grossly irritating. The climax, which shouldve been a strongpoint, is least convincing!
The narrative also suffers due to its lethargic pace, which tests the patience of the viewer. Moreover, it is laced with dull songs – mainly in the first half – which act as speed breakers..The screenplay is full of flaws, but the dialogues are excellent. Besides being novel, they make you sit up and notice them.
Director Rohan has shot the film stylishly, but how one wishes he wouldve concentrated less on making each frame look alluring and more on substance. While he shows promise in a few deftly-executed sequences, lets not forget that the best of names dont rise beyond a point if burdened with a weak screenplay.
Talking of performances, the film belongs to Ritesh. But the actor is not in complete form as he was in Kya Kool Hain Hum .Perhaps, the role this time around is not author-backed, nor does the script give him optimum scope to have an encore.
Abhishek is alright, but needs to work hard in sequences that demand dramatics. Nana goes overboard. Priyanka is fair.
Disaster !!!!
