Having lived in Mumbai all my life, I have grown up to realise many facts about it. One of them happens to be about BMC. SUpposed to be managing Mumbai and all its lifelines, BMC has hitherto been a shoddy player.
Be it roads, the sewage or the water supply, there are enough instances of disastrous management. Well, the organisation as such is a very employee-friendly with pay packages comparable to the best ones!! can you imagine a sweeper getting paid 8000 bucks plus other benefits!! well.... I wouldnt mind paying so much if he would do the work.... but the problem is just not that.. due to overemployment , sweepers now dont have work. so they just make merry and roam around with a broom and dust pan... and the work if any is petty!! the best of them all is the gang of rat-killers!! these chaps get paid heavily for getting bags ad bags of dead ratS!! instead of employing some pest control guys, our BMC believes in these kind of things....
By the way, there is no definition for ’ bribe’ in the BMC dictionary. any official file or work cannot get through without greasing a few palms!! be it then a fifty or a hundred. bigger jobs have better grease!! runs into lakhs and crores.
inspite of knowing all this, we mumbaikars do not care to do anything about it. well, the reason is simple. nobody has the time and patience to run to the courts!! plus...since this is a vicious circle... ahem... you wouldnt end up anywhere.
so guys, next time u c a bmc worker.. just try not to feel jealous of him. he may have a thick gold chain adorned... and a broom in hand!! or should I say they are all ’BORN WITH A SILVER BROOM IN HAND’.more like it...
