Freeeeeeedom....nothing else matters

Forget England and Scotland. Watch this movie if you are one of those who loves hearing tales of heroism and is drawn to acts of courage. Braveheart is a movie rich with content that is emotionally charged, patriotic and full of bravery.

I have seen Mel Gibson in two of his fantastic war movies – Braveheart and The Patriot. While I watched The Patriot soon after its release, Braveheart came my way only recently. Both these movies are good entertainment stuff. It would be unfair to say which of these two is better because both are equally good and, made during two different times.

Braveheart is a three hour long movie. It tells us the story about Scotland’s brutal battle for independence in the 13th century. Though it is a story about how Scotland rises up against England’s military advances; viewers are inspired by William Wallace (character. Played by Mel Gibson). William is a man who loves freedom and does not likes the war. He keeps himself away from the war till the time his wife is murdered by the tyrant English troops. This is when Gibson’s quest for bringing freedom for his country begins.

Braveheart starts with a scene when William is a young boy. His family is butchered by the English and William was a witness. Raised by his uncle William learns his first lesson form him, “A warrior is known by his sense and not might’. William follows this advice religiously and uses a combination of strategy and might to fight against the English. (The same ploy is used in The Patriot).

We see Mel Gibson play the character of a war hero rather skillfully. He is a soldier but we also get to see his gentle part. He is a lover and turns a rebel only when his newly wed wife is murdered. The transition of a man from a gentle and caring lover to a war-leader is awesome.

This movie is meant to inspire. While freedom is dear to everyone, only a few would die for it. William preferred freedom and chose to die then bend down and admit defeat before a tyrant king. The terminating scene in the movie is emotionally charged and filled not with pity but bravery.

Watch this movie to know how men have died crying for freedom!
