Trust me when I say that I was never interested in getting this movie at the video rental store. But like any other girl out there I wanted to get my mind off some personal turmoil Im yet currently going through and ended up watching this last evening, besides I really like Anne Hathaway.
Blonde Liv(Kate Hudson) and brunette Mary(Anne Hathaway) have been dreaming of their perfect wedding together since they were kids. The two have always been fascinated with The Plaza for a very long time & think of it as the most elaborate place on earth to recite their vows.Livs quite fiery & headstrong while Mary tends to be patient & forgiving.Their characters suddenly clash when both of them get engaged to the men of their dreams.Mary, a teacher, gets proposed the fortune cookie way to Fletcher Flemson(Chris Pratt).Livs boyfriend, Daniel Williams(Steve Howey) doesnt exactly go down on one knee, but the couple do get engaged finally.Livs dominant personality is seen in a nasty manner when she finds out that Marys got engaged before herself & due to envy enquires Daniel as to why he doesnt want to get married to her.Not embarrassingly for Liv, Daniel had planned out a whole special evening, but he gets cut short due to her insistence.Happy at their exciting new prospect, the two young ladies seek out the best wedding planner in town, Marion St.Claire(Candice Bergen).Due to an unfortunate calculation on her part, Marion is shocked to note that both the brides-to-be have been registered to wed the same day.An ugly cold war then ensues between the two when none of them wants to compromise & shift their wedding dates hitherto.Mary gets snubbed when Liv takes advantage of her passive nature & outsmarts her.Mary feels that shes never been selfish over anything in her life & deserves to atleast have her perfect wedding. For the first time ever, Mary decides to stand up to Liv & fight fire with fire.Liv is astounded atMarys responses & makes her life a testament to crush her best friends wedding at any cost.Meanwhile Livs brother, Nate(Bryan Greenberg) is not keen on letting his two most favourite girls in the world fight in this manner.Especially since, hes pleasantly surprised at Marys new found courage..................not that hes never found her interesting before.Infact, hes been having a lifelong crush on his sisters BFF(best friend forever).Marys fiancee soon begins to tire of her frequent mindgames & lets her know that Liv will soon get divorced since her man will never be able to control her.The remark tends to send Mary over-the-edge as she realises that she herself can be very easily contolled by any man due to her inability to defend herself emotionally unlike Liv.As the wedding festivities continue, Mary & Liv turn more hostile towards each other.Surprisingly, Livs fiancee is patient & has no issue on account of his manhood being dominated by his future wife.He helps in unmasculine activities such as wedding shopping, cake selection, flower arrangements, china patterns, etc.On the other hand, Fletcher begins to show his domineering side & like any other male member of the society resists getting tied down on anything to do with the wedding. The fateful day soon arrives, with Liv & Mary looking beautiful but incomplete.Due to a mistake on Livs part, Marys wedding gets destroyed & the two get into a physical catfight. The duo soon make up with Marys plans being changed for the better.
The story seems to suggest funtertainment.Believe me...........as the plot unravels, one tends to get fed up with overly hyped up drama.Watching the catfight is fun, but not on two adults who lack the patience to sit down & talk.Kate Hudsons blonde locks & Anne Hathaways mysterious brunette tresses did no good to make me like the film any better. The female actors do dominate the scenes here. The storyline does suggest a great moral, but no one can sense it in a movie which tells all the guys out there that women are no more than selfish bs wholl do anything to succeed in life, even if it means watching your best friends & family suffer. The two lead brides along with Candice Bergen & Kristen Johnston are a totaly wasted & hopefully they got good paychecks atleast.
Final grade- C-, has some funny moments but overall pretty lame.I cant understand the financial success this hate you movie rendered, although Im sure the gross revenue simply shot up due to peoples reaction to the awesome hair pulling & sophisticated feminine wrestling scenes.
P.S.- Kate Hudsons wedding makeup looks as though shes got a blood clotted black eye!
