BA: Big and Strong And Not Bad !

British Airways bills itself as the ’’... World’s favourite airline..’’ Well that is the hype but does it really live up to the billing. I have probably flown on BA twenty or more times including short haul flights to European destinations from London Heathrow and a number of long haul flights from the likes of Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to London. What then are my conclusions ?

First the pros. There is no doubt that British Airways has a huge route network and there are loads of connecting flights from its main hubs. It has a large fleet of modern aircraft and is also one of only two airlines that flies the supersonic Concord. The aircraft are well maintained and BA’s engineering standards are known to be high.

Ground service is fairly good. I have experienced a lot worse and generally the ground staff are reasonably helpful. They can be a bit intimidating about baggage but there again there are security considerations to be taken into account,

In flight service is also reasonably good. Not as good as some Asian airlines but arguably better than a number of other European and American airlines. The stewards and in flight cabin crew are often representative of modern multiracial Britain - on my last flight the chief purser was a British Indian and several of the flight attendants were British Pakistani and another was Chinese.

The food is, I think, good. I have had a nice tasty rack of lamb on one long haul flight, enjoyable breakfasts and there is also a good selection of drinks on offer. The in flight entertainment system is also good, although I think Singapore’s is marginally better.

Now for the cons. I would suggest that BA flights do not have a good deal of leg room, at least on economy flights. I have encountered more space on several other airlines. Another gripe concerns the fact that this airline does not always communicate with passengers as well as some other airlines. On several flights I found there was little or no communication from the pilot or co pilot, although to be fair on my last long haul flight the pilot was both friendly and communicative,

Well there you have it my review of British Airways.
