No caller ID on our phone, BSNL staff don't care

BSNL has made Caller ID facility free of cost and activated it for all landline customers across India. However, we are not getting the same on our landline number in Baroda (0265-231xxxx).

Recently, I was there and I thought I’ll go to the respective BSNL exchange and ask them why it’s not working. The helpdesk person there confirmed that Caller ID is not working for 231-series numbers, to which our phone belongs. When asked why that is the case, he said it is due to some "technical fault."

When asked how long it would take to rectify this "technical fault", considering the Caller ID facility was available since many years, the person said "Wait and watch!"

I was really amazed by this attitude! This gentleman is sitting in a world of his own, where there are no hurries and no worries. There is no sense of urgency or responsibility, nor is there any concern for customer satisfaction!

Here is the mail I sent:

We have a BSNL telephone (0265-231xxxx) installed at xxx, Akota, Baroda, falling under Alkapuri exchange. We are not getting the Caller ID facility though it is free and enabled for most BSNL numbers across India since the last couple of years.

When we enquired at our exchange, they said that Caller ID facility is disabled for 231xxxx series numbers because of some "technical problem." When asked when this technical problem would be resolved (since already a couple of years have passed by), the response given by the helpdesk person was: "Wait and watch!"

I would like to know the following:

  1. What exactly is the technical problem because of which 231xxxx series numbers in Baroda are not getting Caller ID?

  2. Why has this issue not been fixed for the last several years?

  3. What is the expected and concrete timeframe within which BSNL plans to extend this long overdue service to 231xxxx series numbers?

Regards

Vijay

This grievance has been recorded under registration no. DOTEL/E/2009/01441.

Let’s "wait and watch" now. Nothing more to do.

If I don’t receive any response in a reasonable time frame, I am planning to file a RTI application with my questions.
