Box Office Hits... but are they actually engrossing??? Coming to the term of pure unadulterated entertainment, then Bollywood movies are really worth it. After a heavy weeks work, when you saunter into a cinema hall for entertainment, then Bunty aur Babli(B&B) is a perfect choice for you. But one thing, please dont ask logic coz cinemas are just fiction and of course this can never happen in reality.
Big stars, Abhishek and Rani wanted to get rid of their Yuva and Black hangovers respectively and so decided to act in a comic caper. Comes handy is B&B which gives them ample opportunity to chat, enjoy, travel, sing & dance and most importantly con people so that people can completely forget them as Lallan and Michelle.
B&B has a story??
----------------------------
Okies... now the story is very simple. Two individuals(a guy and a girl) from an unknown village (!!!) want to make it big in life but doesnt get the right chance to showcase their talent. The guy is Rakesh aka Bunty (Abhishek) and the girl is Vimmi aka Babli (Rani Mukherji). The guy wants to be a business king while the girl wants to become a model. They freak out of their house without their parents consent, travel from one place to another (??) but are shown the exit everywhere. Finally they decide to reach Mumbai to try their luck. To reach Mumbai, they need money and so they try to con somebody to get the money. What initially starts as a petty theft goes on to become their hunt for bread and a job for life. A police Officer (Amitabh) is on a mission to nab them. what happens?
So does B&B keeps you glued to the screen?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
sometimes yes and sometimes no.
The first half mainly focusses on the travel of Bunty and Babli from one place to another. There are some enchanting moments in the movie. Take for instance, the scene when Rani goes for the Miss India contest and her interactions with the watchman and the beauties is hilarious(The way Rani utters Bal Bal bach gaye is the place where I laughed in this comic caper). Also, her second encounter in another city when the person asks her for a night out, her ek zor ka chanta was excellent.
Also when Abhishek realizes that his ideas had been stolen by another guy, his reactions are good. Lastly, when Abhishek realizes that he wanted to become only a con man and never tried to become a good man and Rani saying Babli ke bina bunty kuch nahi is good. The introduction of Amitabh as a cop towards the interval is just like his earlier introduction in Kyun Ho Gaya Na. So I didnt expect much in the proceedings and surprisingly nothing happens.
The second half goes a bit dragging and the Kajra Re song is an unnecessary addition. But itz a must ingredient for pure entertainment. The pre-climax when Amitabh finds the culprit looks racing but the climax ends on an unbelievable note.
Of the con-games, only the Taj Mahal episode stands out. Though it is unbelievable, you will still want to see what happens. The next one will be looting the mall. All the songs are excellent and chartbuster variety. I personally liked Chup Chup ke and Kajra Re.
On the flip side,
Why should Ash dance for such a number? The song was very good but towards the close of the song, when u see Ash, u will realize the kind of cheapness she has projected in the song. The song is a major hindrance too.
The way the people con (the pre-climax airport scene) looks kiddish. How can someone go inside the baggage storage area in the airplane and after getting stuck how can he come out?
Forgot to tell you about the hospital scene toward climax. U will know when u see it.
Performances
-----------------------------
Abhishek looks very good and has really matured as an actor. He performs ably and is very good when he advices everyone like is duniya mein do tarah ke log or whatever (though it is copied from his fathers dialogue in Hum). Rani Mukherji is excellent but I didnt like her cry. Otherwise she was fantastic and was a great relief amidst kiddish con games. She looks great in song sequences. No doubt, Abhishek-Rani chemistry rocks. Amitabh Bachaan is good but I dont know he is getting typecast in similar roles. But his acting is good. Ash please come back to Hindi cinemas for a full fledged role. U looked ravishing, beautiful and danced gracefully but we dont want to see you as an Item Girl. Raj Babbar as abhisheks dad was good. The others were excellent.
Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is a BIG PLUS for the movie. Cinematography is above average especially in the song sequences. Choreography for Kajra Re and Nach Baliye was extraordinary. Screenplay by Shaad Ali has some letdowns but the movie as a whole is entertaining if you dont believe in logics. Story by Adithya Chopra (Is it ???) leaves a lot of unanswered questions. But pat on his shouder for trying something different. The movie is already a hit and doing great business.
Verdict
-------------------
If you wanna see a movie for pure entertainment without asking any cross- questions, B&B is the perfect fare for you.
Rating : 7 on 10 for the entertainment package.
