Hi Friend heres a short description just to guide you while buying a modem.
Indian Market is flooded with all sorts of companies manufacturing modems in so many models which are enough to baffle you.
I may not be the ultimate authority to talk on this subject but heres a small piece of advice.
External or Internal?
Modems are available in these two types out of which you have to opt for an external modem if you are living in a remote place where electric lines and telephone lines are parallelly running on poles(this is to avoid any electrical damage to your CPU and Motherboard if the wires meet)
Otherwise an Internal Modem is sufficient.
How many Kbps?
The Kbps determines the speed of the modem(data transfer) and it is advisable to take one with the higher Kbps value 56 Kbps for example
With Sound Emulation or without?
Sound emulation is a specialisation of the modem by which you can carry out conversations on the telephone which are dialled by the modem it helps to use the headphone and talk on phone when you are glued to your PC.
which Chipset?
Connexant, Rockwel, US Robotics, Motorola are some of the companies manufacturing chipsets for the modems which are further assembled by D-Link, Mercury, Kobian, LG on their PCBs the best chipset is Motorola though all the others are the same speed ones but still you can feel the difference
All in a nutshell
1) Decide your modem(External or Internal)
2) Check for a Good speed(56 Kbps)
3) Check out wether it has a Sound Emulator
4) Have a look at the Chipset
5) Insist on a 1 year Warranty
Finally
While buying a modem you have to keep your Eyes Wide Open
Though now you can keep your Mouth Shut
