’’He Has arrived in a city where everyone wants him dead’’.This is a very strange and a different line, which is very uncommon!This line is enough to make you get interested in the film!So, since March 2003, the trailors of the film have been showing and finally, in September 2003, it has released!The trailors of this film were also very different!No songs, were shown in the trailors, and nor were there any scenes shown in the trailors, that the hero and heroine are romancing!The film is really different, and this is not a lie!There are thrills, there is suspense, and too many twists and turns, which will make the audiences stick on their seats!
THE FILM:
’’Calcutta Mail’’, produced by Allu Arvind and directed by Sudhir Mishra, stars Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Sayaji Shinde, Saurabh Shukla, Satish Kaushik and Manisha Koirala, in a very interesting role!This is director Sudhir Mishra`s first commercial film, and he has already made art and serious films, which were appreciated!So, now this is a big question, that will he succeed in making a commercial film!OH!YES! he does!
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Avinash(Anil Kapoor):Avinash, has landed in a city, where everyone wants him dead!He has landed in Kolkata through Calcutta Mail, in the search of Lakhan Yadav, a man!In his journey, he meets lots of people, like a pimp and many gangsters!No one is willing to help him to find out Lakhan Yadav!Why is he searching for Lakhan Yadav, and will he find him out?Anil Kapoor, is really one of the best actor Bollywood has!He looks fresh, young and impressive and with it he gives a brilliant performance, as a frustrated person!The face expressions he makes and the way he speaks his lines are praiseworthy!All Anil kapoor fans, get ready once again!
2.Bulbul(Rani Mukherji):Bulbul, is a young, friendly and lively girl, who has her own tensions in life!She falls in love with Avinash, later on!Now, she is a suspect!Is she Rima or Bulbul?This is the question, which comes across!Rani Mukherji, again looks beautiful and gives a decent performance!She has done full justice to her role!
3.Ghatak(Saurabh Shukla):Ghatak is a pimp, who is willing to help Avinash to find out Lakhan!Ghatak is carefree, but a very interesting character too!Saurabh Shukla, also lends a commendable support, throughout the film!
4.Sujan Singh(Satish Kaushik):Sujan Singh, is a politician and a businessman, whose daughter married Avinash, and her son was kidnapped!Satish Kaushik is there in a very interesting role, and he leaves a mark!
5.Sanjana(Manisha Koirala):The one whose entry brings the twist in the story, is Sanjana, whose role and character, I won`t reveal, otherwise what`s the fun?A very interesting part of the film is this character!Manisha Koirala, gives an excellent performance, in a short but a significant role!She is my all time favourite actress, and one reason of watching this movie was surely Manisha Koirala!Here she impresses but lets see her in her next film ’’Market’’!I saw a song of the film ’’Market’’, and there poor Manisha was looking so fat, that she couldn`t move herself.However she is, still I love her!
Sayaji Shinde, as Lakhan also impresses!
THE STORY:
Avinash, arrives in a Kolkata, through Calcutta mail, in search of Lakhan yadav!There, everyone wants him dead, and he meets up with strange people out there!His life gets more in trouble!So, this is the story of Avinash.Enters Bulbul in her life, whom he meets in a chawl!Bulbul falls in love with Avinash, but Avinash tells her that he doesn`t want to get in such things, because he already has a son!A pimp, Ghatak, tells Avinash, that he will help him on succedding in his mission!Now, there is a twist in the story!Avinash finally meets Lakhan!What will happen?What is this all about?Why was Avinash searching for Lakhan?These things are going to be revealed but not in the review!These things are going to be revealed in the theatres, when you`ll see the film!
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Sudhir Mishra`s direction is amazing!All the scenes are executed brilliantly!Be it, Avinash`s entry in Kolkata, or Avinash`s and Lakhan`s face to face encounter!Cheers!Screenplay, is gripping!There are so many constant twists and turns in the film, that not once will you feel bored!Action, is amazing!Cinematography and background music, are also two plus points, which produce more interest of the viewer!There are 3 songs, but they still don`t make this film like a usual Bollywood film!(Although their interference will be disliked by some audiences!)One thing, which can affect the film badly is its late release but if ’’Kaante’’, despite being late could be successful, so why cant Calcutta Mail be?
ON THE WHOLE:
’’Calcutta Mail’’, makes for an interesting viewing!This one is seriously different, and moreover, it has a great story to make you see this movie, without getting bored!This film has it all, which a winner needs!
