The first time I saw Cameron Michelle Diaz in ’’The Mask’’ (starring Jim Carrey) my jaws just dropped to the ground. Many years down the line she still has that effect on me (not to mention also the rest of mankind).
Being an avid movie-goer I soon started to see beyond just Diaz the model to Diaz the actress. She seemed to take to movies as naturally as a fish to water. Its hard to believe that ’The Mask was her first movie. Though it seems that her preferred genre is comedy she displays equally apt skill & naturalness in all other genre, may it be drama, romance or action. No matter how big or small her part is there is something that makes us sit up & notice the character.
Movies like ’The Last Supper’, ’ Vanilla Sky’, ’ Any Given Sunday’ or ’Gangs of New York’ are testimonials of the first type. Although it can be seen that we can never attribute the success of those movie due to the presence of Cameron Diaz in them. All I can say is that the directors failed to use her to her full potential.
When it comes to comedy or romance, you are looking at the queen of the category. ’There’s Something about Mary’, ’My Best Friend’s Wedding’, The absolutely unforgettable ’Shrek’ series; need I say more? The first of which made her an absolute favorite among movie fans all over the world, despite its raunchy content comedy. Has now a faithful children following her appearance as the voice of Princess Fiona in the ’Shrek’ series. She was able to hold out on her own despite being cast opposite Julia Roberts in ’My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Cameron Diaz most obviously a fine actress.
Its a pity the Academy awards decided to pass her over on more than one occasion. This is allegedly due to the Academy’s attitude towards fantasy fiction movies & those who poke fun at the Academy.
She is the second actress (after Julia Roberts) to command $20 million fees, when she signed up to do ’Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle’.
In all, I can say, Cameron Diaz is most definitely in a league of her own.
