Selling "Foreign" products in India is Illegal

According to CCAvenue, selling foreign or "imported products" in India, despite having all the licenses and paying taxes, is an illegal act.

Yesterday, I requested for access to “India’s largest and most reliable payment gateway”, and I was told that it would be activated as soon as I produced the documents. So, I had them ready. But, here’s what happened when I received the call:

The lady who called asked me what I was going to sell.

I said “Home Automation” products.

She asked for an explanation.

I explained her that they are “internet connected devices that can be controlled from anywhere”. She does not understand. I explain again. She finally understands it, but asks a weird question: “So, the device can be operated from anywhere? Even outside India?” I was like, yeah, sure, why not. IoT devices can be controlled from anywhere in the world.

She said she needed to confirm a few things and she’ll call back. I found that pretty weird, since she never asked me anything about my company. After 10 minutes, I get a call and she says this “Sorry Sir, we cannot offer our gateway as you don’t sell Indian products.”

Seriously? Since when did a payment gateway become a national ambassador for the “Make in India” campaign?

There are dozens of brands in India, including Philips, Samsung, Apple, etc. that don’t make their products in India, but sell them here. Besides, we have all the licenses and pay all the taxes for the products we import. On what grounds have they denied the service?

Guys, just spare the trouble and go for PayUMoney, PayU Biz or RazorPay.
