In some old film, the hero is given a challenge that he has to spend X amount of money within 30 days. He tries to make a film expecting it will be a huge flop & thus help him spend all the money quickly. It seems as if the producers of this film have also been given such a challenge & they came up with this film as the solution. Going by the fact that there were less than a dozen of us in the hall, it must be said that they have succeeded in their challenge unlike the story of the old film.
The story is about a ROYAL(note the bold font because that is the essence of the film) family headed by Anupam Kher who thinks all other non-royalty is sub human. His son(Tushar Kapoor) is in love with a Punjabi Kudi Chandini(Kulraj Randhawa) who, at the end, turns out to be an orphan. The so called story is about how this couple tries to get the approval of the father. Add in a few other characters(brothers of the hero) who also fancy their chances with Chandini & the antics of her parents(played by Fareeda Jalal & Om Puri) to keep the film running for the mandatory 2 hours. Chandini looks cute with her dimple but otherwise there is nothing else to add apart from that I managed to have a quick nap also.
There has been an attempt to make it sound as an out & out comedy film but most of the jokes fall flat. E.g. when the brothers start beating one guy in the darkness, one of them says Rahul, Laxman, Ganguly tum bhi maaro & then justifies it saying it is to confuse the guy getting beaten to believe that there were many others hitting him, Chandni is asked how she got her name & tells she first kicked her mom in the womb when her parents were watching Chandni(Sridevi / Rishi starrer). And then to a question what if it was a boy, she says he would have been named Chandra Chud. The only moment which appeared funny was when Tushar’s brothers are trying to hit at Chandini in a gym & Tushar manages to keep them in check.
There are 3 songs in the film – one is the original Chandni number which is also the background score throughout the film & happens to be the best of the lot. All in all, a must watch if you have nothing better to do.
