* * * Soulless journey - Chal Chala Chal * * *

Running an establishment is not easy. Only with the positive support of the system it can work smoothly. What if the system works against it?

Some two decades ago, a film called ’Varavelpu’ rockedMalayalam film industry. A state which is filled with NRIs and NRKs back to home is an experience. If the same person says he is not returning back to abroad, then their treatment is in another style. In Varavelpu, Mohalal played the role of the returned NRI who start his career by investing the remaining money in abus. The film ends where the system failed him to operate the bus and he had to return to gulf again.

Assuming the NRI angle will not work in an all India scenario (Where they are only known about rich NRIs living in US or UK andthat too from Punjab, thanks to films likeDDLJ, PARDES) the background is changed to a person who thinks differently fromothers, i.e. Deepak (Govinda). In a court case verdict he got an old bus as a recovered asset. On his father’s (Om Puri) advise he started operating the bus which was named as Chal Chala Chal. Sundar (Rajpal Yadav) is part of the Chal Chala Chal Company as well where a loan given by him to Deepak is yet to be returned. CCC is all about how Deepak find it difficult to operate the Bus and how he finds his life partner on its operation.

The original of the movie was a beautiful and heart touching where the social message was sent out quite convincingly. Unfortunately, the writers failed to transform the script with its soul. The hero looks like facing an identity crisis in many places. The changed roles of Brother in laws did more damage than good. The 15 crore bungalow angle spoiled the cause of poverty all together. When the good walking father redecorate the bus with the money which he got by selling the bungalow one can only pity the re-writer’s senses. However, the added fun scenes from one another movie ’…Parakkum Thalika’ was affective and I only wish they added one or two extra dose of it. However, I am still to digest the Hero’s silly gestures like I will not look at the heroine’s face. The director failed to give an affective finish to the unimpressive episode as well.

The first half an hour of the movie was quite boring but then the movie did come back with some tickling scenes for which I can see the audience laughing all out. The second half was more of a serious nature than comedy and have to admit was better than the first half.

Where the screen play was weak, the dialogues were very good. Editing was a disaster.

Govinda was good in the role of an ’angry young man’in the climax, but in the first half he was quite mediocre. Rajpal Yadav was all in his usual form and he did generate some fun. Reema Sen did her role quite comfortably and the director could not have asked for more. The one who got clapping from the audience was however, Shakti Kapoor in the very climax. That however I consider as a clapping to thedialogue writer than to the actor. Om Puri was wasted with an unwanted character in the movie. Asrani and Manoj Joshi both talented actors too didn’t had anything to do in the movie. Murali Sharma was ok in the small role.

Music of the film matches to the mood of the sequences andI can say average to good. Choreographywas pretty ordinary, but the sets for the dance sequence were good.

For one who have scene the original it isadvisable to stay away from this as long as possible. This failed remake however is ok for a singlewatch for others, for the comedy and glimpses of a story and few good dialogues. No need to mention that you have to keep yourbrain & heart at home where the same is not required to watch thisfilm. It is not an all out comedymovie, but with a story which may appeal more to the rural than Urban India.
