Chalte Chalte is a very sweet and endearing movie. Boasting the King Khan and the gorgeous Rani Mukerji (who seems to be climbing towards being the Rani of Bollywood), Chalte Chalte has nothing new in its plot, but the star performances, well-handled script, screenplay and great music will make it sprint to the finish line.
But before sprinting off into the horizon, it starts with the story of Raj (Shah Rukh), an impulsive and sentimental man, who accidentally (literally) bumps into Priya (Rani), a practical and rich heiress, with his truck. Priya is soon-to-be engaged with childhood sweetheart, Sameer (Jas Arora), but after some precious and beautiful moments spent with Raj, who is head over heals for her and expresses it openly, Priya realizes that she too loves him. Shot in the unexplored locales of Greece, the wooing between Raj and Priya carries some of the most beautiful aspects of the movie including the the hit song Suno Na. Priya breaks off the engagement with Sameer and marries Raj with the approval of her family. However, they dont live happily ever after. The story has just begun.
Post-marriage, the cracks start to show in their relationship. To some people, this is reminiscent of Saathiya, however, Saathiya deals with the meaning of love, whereas this movie deals with the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus: the maturity of love. Thus, shadows of Saathiya can be set-aside because they are purely coincidental. The movie does have some loose-ends (especially in the climax scence when Rani is leaving Raj forever) but they can easily be forgotten because Chalte Chalte has a lot of appealing packages:
1) Shahrukh looks slimmer and has done a marvelous job as usual. He fits right into the role and looks good as well.
2) Rani looks more gorgeous than ever before with a new wardrobe and presentation. She sizzles onscreen, looks good with Shahrukh and does justice to her role. It is hard to imagine how Aishwariya would have fit into the role, let alone do it well. But thats history. Rani is alone, worth it on big screen
3) The music is superb! Suno na and Tauba tumhare are shot in excellent locales and all the songs are beautifully composed and rendered.
The supporting cast does an adequate job but the movie belongs to both Shah and Rani. Shah Rukh proves that he is the King Khan and Rani proves that she is ready to step into the shoes of her cousin, Kajol.
Watch Chalte Chalte with your significant other and you are bound to love it!
