Do you remember the ”Poo”, from K3G and the ‘cool guy’, from ”Jhankaar Beats”.Aren`t they different from each other?Kareena Kapoor, and Rahul Bose, star in this film, about a prostitute. The film has so much going its way, especially the music. This is the film which was actually being directed by Anant Balani, who died, and left everyone with his last film ”Ek Din 24 Ghante”(which was actually a nightmare). So, Sudhir Mishra, another excellent director, directs this film. The only question which is left is of course, that how is the movie???
THE FILM:
Pritish Nandy Communications. ”Chameli”, directed by Sudhir Mishra, stars Kareena Kapoor and Rahul Bose, in the lead. This film is not your regular Bollywood, kind of a flic, but is an off-beat film.To see Kareena Kapoor, in an author-backed role, that also in an off-beat film, sounds interesting!
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Chameli(Kareena Kapoor):Chameli, is a prostitute, who has a mysterious past. There were circumstances which forced her to become a prostitute. She is a very confident, and a ‘shameless’ girl.Kareena Kapoor, was a nightmare for everyone in ”Main Prem Ki Deewaani Hoon”, but in this film, she has proved that, she has become much more sensible, an actress. Her scenes with Rahul Bose, or her actions (smoking etc.), are all brilliant. She plays the main character of this film, very well, without showing the ’Poo’, attitude.
2.Aman Kapoor(Rahul Bose):Aman Kapoor, is a widower who lost his wife during a rainy night. He is a dull character, who is leading a very dull life, although a very rich and dignified person.Rahul Bose, as usual, gives an amazing performance, even this time.He looks what he is playing, and does justice to a very difficult role.Yo wont be feeling as if you`re watching an actor, but you`ll feel as if you`re watching the real Aman Kapoor.
The film, basically revolves around these 2 stars (Rahul Bose and Kareena Kapoor), but I can`t forget to mention, Mahek, of ”Nayee Padosan”, who makes an appearance, in a song, and looks amazing, dancing beautifully.Rinke Khanna, doesn`t get any scope to perform.Makrand Deshpande, is alright.
THE STORY:
”It happened one rainy night”
The story revolves around two people, Aman Kapoor, a widower, and a businessman, and Chameli, a prostitute. Both of them are very different people. If Aman Kapoor is rich, Chameli is poor.If Aman Kapoor, is a decent and respectable person, Chameli is an outspoken and ‘bold’girl. One rainy night, while going back to home, Aman Kapoor`s car stops, where he has to wait for a mechanic.Ther he meets Chameli, a prostitutewho tells him to come with her.Hindi dialogue-(”Bolo na saab, kya iraada hai?Chalna hai kya?”).This night affects both their lives. Two different people meet each other, and then many incidents take place.
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Sudhir Mishra`s, direction is excellent.Where in the first half, he doesn`t let down his viewers, by showing scenes between Chameli and Aman Kapoor, on the other hand, in the second half, also, he provides a twist to this movie.Screenplay, is gripping.Right from the start, you`ll feel as if this is a film, which is to be taken seriously.Editing is crisp. There are some unnecessary scenes, but then there is no film which is ’perfect’.The film moves very fast, which proves that the editing is well done!Cinematography, is breath-taking.The rainy nights, have been captured exquisitely, in the camera.Manish Malhotra`s, costumes for Kareena Kapoor, for the character of Chameli, are also wonderful. She wears a simple kind of a sarree.Dialogues, are very suitable for a film like, this one.Sandesh Shandilya`s, music is wonderful. The soundtrack consists of tuneful tracks.”Bhaage Re Mann”, ”Sajna ve Sajna”, and “Jaane”, are a treat for the listeners and the songs have also been picturised very well.
ON THE WHOLE:
”Chameli”, is a very well made film, in every respect. It consists of excellent direction and performances, and soulful melodies. It is a different film, and those who were waiting for a different film to come, this one comes as a whiff of fresh air.Not to be missed!
