I have been following The entertainment debate very keenly and I have come up with one conclusion, we are in danger of being Hijjacked by Cable, Satellite and Broadband Tv providers. From Africa, America, Europe to Asia, Tv sets are no longer what they used to be.
I remember when I was young anything that hapened on Tv would be viewed by the entire country and everyone will have a comment on it. That was because we had very few channels and we all knew what to watch at a given time of the day!
Nowadays, Tv is no longer a necessity, it is actually a status symbol. This is manifest plainly at School and college level where the GREAT DIVIDE is highly visible. An innocent question like ’’ Who watched Oprah?’’ Or Did you watch Cricket on Zee Tv or ’’ Wow who watched Tom Clancy on the Discovery Channel? or More ’’ The Survivor is Shooting in The Maasai Mara in KenyA’’will devide the class momentarily on the ’’haves’’ and the ’’have-nots’’ The haves will talk animatedly, leaving their poor classmates dead silent!
We are slowly moving away from the nuclear wars, Gulf wars( Which are both fought far away) to the Remote Control wars(that is fought in our homes), and in this type of war if you rely on Free to Air Tv you better not freak out because you will not be affected at all! Free to Air Tv is devoid of any action and all rights to interesting SOAPS, SPORTS ACTION, WILDLIFE and TALKSHOWs have been acquired exclusively by the newcomers in TV worl, The pay TV.
Those who cannot afford The pay channels like Zee, Sky, Fox, or Dstv are really missing out on the entertainment scene! A new generation of KNOW IT ALL is now emerging with the middle class accessing all the good life, while the majority only live in dreamland be it in the slums or rural areas.
But everything comes at a cost. These family that seem to have it all are fighting an interesting war in the living rooms. this is THE REMOTE CONTROL war! It is common sense that men have little to do with SOAPS like : The Bold and The Beautiful, Desperate Housewives, Gillmore Girls, Neighbours etc. But women love them so much! On the Other hand, men love sports! Cricket, Soccer, World cup etc. During Dinner, this war starts in the living room, each snatching a remote from the other, words being bandied and eventually one, almost always the man, giving up: To fight another day.
All will not end there. This will only be half time because when they go to sleep, revenge will be on the way! All attempts by the woman to cuddle her man will be met by rejection! He will pretend to be asleep and frustrate her sexually! This eventually leads to mutual suspicion because a woman who wants sex and is starved is as ferocious as a snake!
Have you ever asked yourself why rich families have lesser children than poor families? There you go! I gave you theb reason! Go out and buy yourself a Satellite Dish! Watch Satellite TV!!!
