“Charlie’s Angels” – PG-13
A take off of the very popular 70’s television show: could the movie stand up to the competition?
The premise is the same as the TV show. There are three beautiful women, Dylan, Natalie and Alex (Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu). They work for Charlie, whom they never meet. Bosley (Bill Murray) is the person they deal with. They are given assignments to catch bad guys, just like the TV version.
Their assignment in this movie is to figure out who has stolen voice-ID software and to retrieve it. Whoever has this software can copy anyone’s voice in the world. The Angels meet some weird people along the way. The first start investigating Mr. Corwin (Tim Curry). The other suspects come out along the way. The creepy “Thin Man” is played by Crispin Glover, most famous for his roles in the Back to the Future series of movies.
Smaller roles were that of the men. Unlike most movies where the crime stoppers are men and the women are waiting at home, these men were on the sidelines. Matt Leblanc, of TV’s Friends, plays love interest of Alex, Luke Wilson is partner to Natalie and Dylan has the rest of the guys including Tom Green and Sam Rockwell. There are short cameo appearances by LL Cool J and John Forsythe’s voice, as in the TV series.
This wasn’t a brilliant movie, but it got the job done. The action scenes done by the women were great. Drew Barrymore decided there were to be no guns used by the women in the movie, their hands (and feet!) did all the action.
The film was written by Ivan Goff (the TV series) and the screenplay by Ben Roberts. Joseph McGinty Nichol directed.
The movie was fun. It was by no means an Oscar winning movie, but a good watch nonetheless. It had great action scenes and the women did just as good a job as any man in an action role. I would recommend this film.
Enjoy!
