Hi , I am have been born and brought up in chennai with exposure to banglore and hyderabad. Having been here and to other cities, I can tell confidently that this is one of the best places in India to live . I will not be talking about tourist spots and attractions, as it has been explained in great detail in many of the reviews here.
It is the best place to live if you are looking for affordable cost of living. For example , if you are earning about 20K per month, you can live off comfartable here. But I donot think its possible in other cities like bombay and delhi. This is because the cost of living is pretty low . That doesnt mean you would have to compromise on quality. You can get everything as you get elsewhere in India at a competitive price.
EDUCATION : If you have children , and you wish them to get excellent education, Chennai is the place. Chennai has long been a hub of educational excellence in all field right from primary schools to colleges. You have the IIT’s and other Engg colleges like Venkateshwara engg college for technical education and Arts colleges like Stella Maris, Ethiraj, Meenakshi, Loyola and Vivekananda college for basic sciences and humanities. Some of these colleges mentioned have been consistently on the TOP 10 lists
HEALTH CARE : Chennai boasts of one of the best medical facilities in the world. This can demonstrated by the fact, people from different countries like even pakistan come down to chennai yto get their surgeries and treatment. You have a lot of speciality hospitals also . Added to that you also have a lot of para medicine treatments like ayurveda, homeopathy, unany, natural treatment which If I am not wrong is literally unavailable in other cities.
NATURE of CHENNAI : For some people who call chennai as conservative, I would like to remind something. You find an amalgam of all kinds of people in chennai. Malayalis, Gujratis, Telugus, Kannadigas - U name it , they wil be there. But unlike cities like Bangalore where they nurse a hatred towrds Tamilians, the citizens co-exist peacefully with other people. Even when tamilians were pelted from pillar to pole in karnataka, such an attitude was literally non-existent here. Now, Is that CONSERVATIVE ? Its not true that people are narrow minded. If they were narrow minded, chennai would have been in a a devastated state as mumbai during babar masjis aftermath. But the situation was under total control then also. So we would rather be called narrow minded if that means peaceful co-existence.If you think that hanging out with friends at discotheques etc is open minded , We’d rather be branded as conservationists. If you find people are not friendly, its not because they are narrow minded. The people here generally keep to themselves and their work. It will take some time for them to come out of their shells. But once they are out, they are very helpful and understanding.
REAL ESTATE : In no city will you be able to buy a house of 1500 sq ft for less than 20 Lakhs. Even in developed areas, the price does not exceed 2500Rs. I know this for a fact because I was scouting for a house recently.
On the downside, people find the climate to be hot and humid. But since most of today work in airconditioned offices and also have AC in their homes, this has also become manageable.The water condition has also improved with the active measures taken by the govt
In short , if you are looking for a city which will provide good education, calm peaceful , uncomplicated life and decent savings chennai is the city for you.
