Damn Biker Cops!

I do not have a problem with the lazy cops sitting at traffic signals or any of those who simply do their work. But it’s those cash addicted uniformed men of the law zipping around on bikes (actually they are parked on the roadside at their worst) who spoils the reputation of the whole force.

When will they learn that they are suppose to help the public, not take financial advantage of every little mistake an ignorant, otherwise law-abiding, citizen makes.

My first hand-on experience was in Pondy Bazaar when I was getting my bike out of a parking area. As I was starting up the bike I noticed the traffic police near me was watching me intently. Sure enough, before I could even go 10 meters, he stopped me and said I was going the wrong way and informed me the fine was ’’only Rs. 300’’. In my confused state (remember this was my 1st time) I parted with a hundred rupees to that bastard. Then he became real nice, stopped all other traffic and cleared the way so I could proceed (still the wrong way, of course). I have had many experiences from then. Maybe I should write a book on it.

And after 3 years in Chennai I have learnt that it is one of the safest among the metros. I consider it a good thing that the only thing that scares me when I go out at night are the oily-faced-moustached-drunk-cops on those blue-and-white mobile units. Too bad that they were supposed to ensure safety for their employers, us the public, not harass us whenever they need cash or get drunk.
