Chokher Bali

If you love the feeling of being in love, if you are emotional, sensitive and practical then this is the book you must read.

I am a die heart fan of Rabindranath Tagore’s writings.Besides Chokher Bali, I have also read Kabuliwala and Ghorer baire. But, Chokher Bali is Rabindranath Tagore’s most happening novel.

Chokher Bali is basically a story about passion, love and emotions revealing the secrets of hearts. This story revolves around only six characters - Mahindra, Bihari- childhood friend of Mahindra, Rajlaxmi- mother of Mahindra, Annapurna- a widowed sister-in-law of Rajlaxmi, Asha- Mahindra’s better half and Binodini- the female protagonist.

Chokher Bali shows the pros and cons of a small family with a single male head. The beginning of the story reveals the love between the couple Mahindra and Asha, small conflicts between the members of the household and so on.But there comes a twist in the story when Binodini who in the meanwhile gets widowed soon after her marriage enters the harmonious life of Mahindra and Asha.

This story is full of such other twists and turns and drama which makes Chokher Bali ’a must read book’.

The work of Radha Chakravarty is really appreciable. The translation of Bengali words like Chokher Bali, Mejobou, Kakima and emphasis put on the pronunciation of the name of Binodini is worth mentioning.

I strongly recommend this book to all the readers. So next time when you go through the books in a bookstall, don’t forget to read Chokher Bali and I am damn sure that you won’t be able to resist it.
